Musketeers Drop Midweek Match at Miami (OH) in Four Sets

Abbey Bessler, Kristen Massa pace Xavier with 10 kills each
OXFORD, Ohio - Xavier volleyball dropped a four-set match at Miami (OH) on Tuesday night at Millett Hall. Both teams move to 3-4 on the year.
• Abbey Bessler and Kristen Massa led Xavier in kills with 10 each. Alexis Newsome added nine and Sofia Peterson chipped in eight.
• Xavier had three more blocks (8-5) than Miami led by Alexis Newsome who had a match-high six (five assist, one solo). Kristen Massa added three block assists.
• Meredith Klare had a match-high 18 digs, while Samantha Foti posted 12. Klare leads the team with 4.21 d/s to rank sixth in the BIG EAST.
• McKena Estes dished out a team-high 20 assists, while Mackenzi Humm added 17. The two setters also combined for 16 digs.
• Neither team led by more than four points in the first set as it had nine ties and two lead changes. Xavier was within one, 20-19, before the RedHawks ended the set on a 5-1 run.
• Neither squad hit well in the opening set as Miami hit .205, and Xavier posted a .103 hitting percentage. Abbey Bessler, Kristen Massa and Sofia Peterson all had two kills for the Musketeers.
• Xavier never trailed in the second set and led by as many as six, 20-14, down the stretch. Xavier hit .290 in the set and got five kills from Alexis Newsome.
• Set three had 13 ties and three lead changes. The Musketeers led 24-23 before the RedHawks scored three straight points to win the set.
• Both teams posted their highest hitting percentage in the match in the set as Xavier hit .312 and Miami hit .400.
• Miami opened the set on an 8-4 run to force a Xavier timeout. The RedHawks posted its largest lead in any set, 21-9, before holding on for the 25-15 victory.
• Xavier travels to the Western Michigan Tournament on Sept. 9-10. The Musketeers open tournament play on Friday at noon against Milwaukee.
