Late Rally Falls Short Against St. John’s on Sunday Afternoon

Musketeers fall, 64-55, at Madison Square Garden
NEW YORK - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 64-55 contest at St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.
The Musketeers (10-12, 2-9 BIG EAST) dropped their seventh straight game, while the Red Storm improved to 15-7 (7-4 BIG EAST).
Xavier trailed by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter before battling back to get within six in the final minute of play. St. John's scored three points down the stretch to seal the win.
• Maddison Blackwell led three Musketeers in double figures with 14 points. The senior forward was 6-for-12 from the floor.
• Maddison Blackwell added a team-high eight rebounds and four steals. Xavier finished the game with 12 steals, matching its season high. The Musketeers have recorded 10 or more steals in a game five times this season.
• Marquia Turner added 12 points, four steals and two assists. Raeshaun Gaffney rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
• Xavier forced 17 turnovers, converting the miscues into a season-high 23 points. St. John's also held a 38-28 advantage on the glass.
• Xavier led 4-2 in the opening minutes on a Raeshaun Gaffney jumper before the Red Storm used an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 10-4. St. John's led by seven, 17-10, before Na'Teshia Owens knocked down a jumper from the top of the key as time expired to get the Musketeers within five.
• Madison Blackwell led Xavier with six points on 3-for-6 shooting to go along with three rebounds.
• St. John's hit two of its first three shots to take its first double-figure lead, 24-14, at the 7:51 mark. Xavier responded by scoring five unanswered points capped by an Imani Parlow jumper to get within five. The Red Storm hit its next three shots to regain its double-figure lead. St. John's led Xavier, 37-26, at the break.
• Maddison Blackwell led the Musketeers with nine points on 4-for-8 shooting. She added a five rebounds as the Red Storm held a 19-15 advantage on the glass.
• The Red Storm built its largest lead of the game, 53-34, at the 2:31 mark. Xavier closed the frame on a 6-0 run capped by an Anniina Äijänen jumper to make the score 53-40.
• Xavier trailed by as many as 15 points early in the quarter before battling back to get within six, 61-55, on a pair of Raeshaun Gaffney free throws with 52 seconds on the clock. Jade Walker scored three points down the stretch to seal the 64-55 win.
