The Musketeers posted a 71-66 overtime win on Saturday afternoon
CINCINNATI - Senior tandem Anniina Äijänen and Jada Byrd combined for 25 points to lead the Xavier women's basketball team to a 71-66 overtime win against New Hampshire.
The game was the first matchup in the Lauren Hill Tipoff Classic at Cintas Center. Mount St. Joseph and Hiram played in the second game of the doubleheader.
• New Hampshire never trailed during the opening three quarters and led by as many as 13 points, 16-3, at the 5:05 mark in the first stanza.
• Anniina Äijänen buried a three pointer on the first possession of the fourth quarter to give the Musketeers their first lead of the game, 46-45. Neither team led by more than two possessions for the remainder of regulation.
• With one second left in regulation, Anniina Äijänen hit a three pointer to tie the game at 62 and send the game into overtime.
• Xavier's defense limited the Wildcats to only one field goal (1-for-7) in overtime to seal the win. The Musketeers also went 4-for-8 from the foul in the extra period.
• Jada Byrd scored a team-high 13 points, while Anniina Äijänen added 12 points. The two players combined to go 9-for-14 from the charity stripe.
• Both teams pulled down 38 rebounds in the contest with Anniina Äijänen and Imani Partlow pacing Xavier with six rebounds each. Jada Byrd, Na'Teshia Owens and Princess Stewart all added five rebounds.
• Xavier's bench outscored New Hampshire, 29-0. The game also had six ties and nine lead changes.
• The Musketeers went 23-for-32 from the foul line and 10-for-26 from behind the arc. Anniina Äijänen led Xavier with three 3-pointers.
• Freshmen Deja Ross, Aaliyah Dunham, Princess Stewart, Aly Reiff, A'riana Gray and Jordyn Dawson combined for 29 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in their Xavier debut.
• Xavier moved to 18-0 in season openers at Cintas Center. The Musketeers also improved to 2-0 in the all-time series against the Wildcats.
