
Xavier Swimming Closes Out USA Swimming Winter National Championships

Caroline Gaertner sets NCAA B-Cut time, becomes first woman in program history to qualify for finals
COLUMBUS, Ohio - A school-record nine Musketeers took part in the 2017 USA Swimming Nationals, held from Wednesday, Nov. 29 through Saturday, Dec. 2 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
Xavier's men opened the meet, competing in the 200 medley and 400 medley relays on Wednesday and Thursday night, respectively. Xavier posted a 10th place finish in the 400 medley relay on Thursday with a time of 3:21.77, the fastest time by the Musketeers so far this season in the event.

Friday featured five Musketeers competing in five different individual events during prelims.
Caroline Gaertner became the first woman in program history to qualify for the finals at the Winter Nationals, finishing 23rd in both the 100 fly and the 100 back prelims to earn a spot in one of three finals heats.

Gaertner finished fifth in the C-Final of the 100 fly on Friday night, with a time of 54.90, besting her BIG EAST-best time in the event set at the CSU Magnus Cup.

Gaertner followed that up with a time of 55.03 in the finals of the 100 back, claiming the fastest time in the BIG EAST so far this season and hitting the NCAA B-Cut standard in the event for the second-straight year. Gaertner's B-Cut time is the first for a Musketeer this season.

Also on Friday, Bunnell led off for the men's competitors in the prelims, posting a time of 50.05 in the 100 fly, the fastest time posted by a BIG EAST competitor this season so far this season, aside from his own time at the CSU Magnus Cup.

Matthew Dyer took part in the prelims of the 100 breast, posting a time of 56.84 in the prelims.
Xavier's men closed out the individual events in the prelims with three Musketeers competing in the 100 back. Sam Johanns led in the Musketeers with a time of 50.88, the fastest time by a Musketeer so far this season. Nathan Runyon followed in Johanns with a time of 51.66 and Bunnell finished in 52.41.

In addition to Gaertner's appearances in Friday's finals, Xavier competed in the 200 free relay on both the men's and women's side. Emily Conners, Abigail Garner, Caroline Gaertner and Paxtyn Drew posted a time of 1:33.80, the fastest time by a BIG EAST squad so far this season, finishing in sixth place.

The men closed out Friday night with Johanns, Dyer, Bunnell and Enrique Hernandez posting a time of 1:24.45 in the 200 free relay, finishing eighth.

In Saturday's prelims, Runyon competed in the 200 back for the Musketeers, posting a time of 1:51.95.

The Musketeers have an extended break before returning to outside competition. The entire squad will next be in action on Jan. 5, 2018, when Xavier travels to Indianapolis to face IUPUI and Ball State.
