Bluiett, O’Mara Lead Xavier Over Terrapins in NCAA Tournament First Round

No. 11 seed Musketeers top No. 6 seed Maryland, 76-65, on Thursday night
ORLANDO, Fla. – Trevon Bluiett and Sean O'Mara combined for 39 points on Thursday night as the No. 11 seed Musketeers topped No. 6 seed Maryland, 76-65, at the Amway Center.
The Musketeers (22-13) used a 14-0 run midway through the second half and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to seal the victory. The Terrapins ended the season with a 24-9 overall record.
Trevon Bluiett scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Musketeers. The junior guard scored 18 points in the second half on 6-for-7 shooting. He finished the game going 7-for-15 from the floor and 5-for-10 from behind the arc. He also matched his career high in steals with four.
Trevon Bluiett has scored at least 17 points in the second half of four of the Musketeers last five games. He has scored in double figures in the second half of seven straight games.
Sean O'Mara scored a career-high 18 points on 5-for-6 shooting. The junior forward added a team-high seven rebounds as the Musketeers held a 34-24 advantage on the glass. He was also 8-for-9 from the charity stripe.
Kaiser Gates added 11 points and J.P. Macura chipped in 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers. Quentin Goodin finished with nine points, five rebounds and a career-high nine assists – matching the Xavier record for assists in an NCAA Tournament game.
Xavier moved to 25-26 all-time in NCAA Tournament action. The Musketeers also improve to 1-2 all-time against Maryland.
The Musketeers hit 50 percent (25-for-50) of their shot attempts in the game, including a .522 field-goal percentage in the second half (12-for-23).
The Musketeers scored 22 points off of turnovers and held a 30-13 advantage in bench points.
Maryland entered the NCAA Tournament having won at least one game in 12 straight tournaments dating back to 1998. Xavier snapped the Terrapins streak as Maryland dropped to 41-26 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.

Xavier maintained its lead until the 3:49 mark when Anthony Cowan knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 30, the third tie of the half. The Musketeers responded with a 5-0 run on back-to-back baskets by Trevon Bluiett and J.P. Macura to make the score, 35-30, with 2:54 on the clock.
Xavier committed four straight turnovers to end the half, allowing Maryland to convert the miscues into six points as the Terrapins took a 36-35 advantage into the locker room. Maryland had 12 points off of turnovers at the break.

Maryland led 50-47 before the Musketeers went on a 14-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 61-50, with 9:08 on the clock. Xavier was 5-for-6 from the floor during the run with four 3-pointers.
Maryland battled back to get within six, 65-59, with 2:47 left in regulation. Xavier responded by scoring four unanswered points to regain its double-figure lead, 69-59.
Xavier went 9-for-10 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the victory and post the 76-65 victory.
Xavier faces No. 3 seed Florida State on Saturday, March 18.
