Redbirds even the series with a 7-5 win on Saturday afternoon

CINCINNATI – Xavier baseball dropped game two of the weekend series with Illinois State, 7-5, at Hayden Field. The Musketeers had their five game win streak snapped as they moved to 12-11 on the year.

The Redbirds moved to 6-14 following the win. Game two of Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 2:45 p.m. with the winner capturing the weekend series. Xavier won game one, 9-8, on Friday night.

XU AT THE PLATE

• Illinois State had one more hit (15-14) than Xavier and committed one more error (2-1). Xavier also left four more runners on base (11-7).
• Leadoff hitter Mitch Gallagher led the Musketeers at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Conor Grammes (2-for-5, R, RBI) and Nate Monastra (2-for-4, R) also added multi-hit games.
• Will LaRue had a stolen base, his ninth of the season. He is now 9-for-10 on the year on the base paths.

XU ON THE MOUND

• Garrett Schilling threw four strikeouts over five innings of work. The junior allowed five runs (three earned) and eight hits.
• Matt Kent(3-1) took the loss for Xavier, allowing two runs and seven hits in 3.1 innings of work. He saw his scoreless inning streak snapped as the sophomore had not allowed a run this year, covering 21.2 innings of work.
• Brad Kirschner threw the final 0.2 innings with two strikeouts. He did not allow a hit or run.

HOW XU SCORED

THIRD INNING: Conor Grammes hit a two-out, RBI double to right field to score Mitch Gallagher – the first run of the game for the Musketeers.
FOURTH INNING: Mitch Gallagher doubled down the left field line to score Nate Monastra for the first of two runs. Gallagher crossed home plate on the following play on a fielding error by the centerfielder on a Joe Gellenbeck hit.
SIXTH INNING: Rylan Bannon hit an RBI single to right center, scoring Matt Fallon.
SEVENTH INNING: Will LaRue hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Conor Grammes.
