Baseball Falls Victim to Late Seton Hall Rally on Friday at Hayden Field

Senior Matt Fallon hit his first homer of the season in the fourth, but SHU scored five in the ninth to steal a win
CINCINNATI – Xavier baseball led late on the strength of a two-run homer by Matt Fallon, but Seton Hall rallied for five in the top of the ninth to secure a comeback win and even the series, 6-3, on Friday afternoon at Hayden Field.
Xavier drops to 19-16 overall (2-3 BIG EAST) with the win, while Seton Hall improves to 16-15 (2-3 BIG EAST).
The rubber match is now set for Saturday afternoon at Hayden Field with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
• Matt Fallon went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer in the fourth, his first of the season, and also worked a pair of walks.
• Chris Givin went 2-for-4 with a bases loaded, RBI single in the third inning.
• Mitch Gallagher (1-for-4), Rylan Bannon (1-for-2, BB), Nate Soria (1-for-4, SB) and Ethan Schmidt (1-for-4, R) also provided hits for the Musketeers.
• The Musketeers worked three walks as a team and have had a base on balls in all 35 games this season.
• Junior Garrett Schilling was solid through five, striking out two and scattering five hits in a no decision. The righty allowed just one unearned run on a chopper and ensuing error at the plate in the fourth inning.
• Sophomore Conor Grammes entered in the sixth and went a career-high three innings in some stellar relief, limiting the Pirates to just one hit and striking out one as well.
• Sophomore Trey Schramm had a rough outing in the ninth, surrendering five runs with two outs as SHU roared back from a 3-1 deficit.
• Senior Brad Kirschner came on in the top of the ninth, getting a swinging strikeout to end the frame.
THIRD INNING: Matt Fallon worked a leadoff walk, moving to second on a passed ball. Mitch Gallagher then dropped a fantastic bunt down the third base line, putting runners on the corners for Joe Gellenbeck. Gellenbeck flew out to left, but a throw to the plate moved Gallagher to second. After Rylan Bannon was plunked to load the bases, Chris Givin shot a ball to right field for a run-scoring base hit to make it 1-0.
FOURTH INNING: Ethan Schmidt singled up the middle to lead off the inning, going to second on a sacrifice bunt by Will LaRue. With one out, Matt Fallon blasted his first home run of the season to give XU a 3-1 lead.
