Garrett Schilling goes six strong, but Musketeers held to four hits
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Garrett Schilling and Conor Grammes combined to allow just one run on three hits, but Xavier baseball was held scoreless for just the fourth time this year in a 1-0 loss to Villanova on Saturday at Villanova Ballpark.
For the second straight day, XU dropped a well-pitched game as the Wildcats capitalized on an infield hit in the sixth to steal a win.
The Musketeers, 10-4 in their last 14, dropped to 17-14 overall and saw a four-game winning streak snapped. The Wildcats improved to 6-16 on the season with a second straight win.
• Xavier was held without a run for just the fourth time in 31 games this season.
• Conor Grammes went 2-for-3 with a walk. The freshman is hitting .500 (25-for-50) with two homers and 10 RBI in his last 14 games and leads XU with 14 multi-hit games.
• Rylan Bannon (1-for-4) and Will LaRue (1-for-4) also had hits for the Musketeers.
• Garrett Schilling (2-3) took a hard-luck loss, going six innings and allowing just one earned run. The junior righty struck out four and scattered three hits.
• Conor Grammes fired two perfect innings in relief, striking out one and allowing no hits.
• Xavier looks to salvage a win in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Villanova Ballpark.
