OAKLAND, Calif. --- David West, 2003 Xavier University graduate and 14-year NBA veteran, won his first NBA Championship tonight as the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers to claim the 2017 NBA Finals 4-1.
West, named 2003 National Player of the Year by Associated Press, the United State Basketball Writers Association and Basketball Times as a Xavier senior, was drafted with the 18th pick in the first round of the 2003 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Hornets. He was named to the 2008 and 2009 NBA Western Conference All-Star Team as a member of the Hornets. West helped the Hornets win their first-ever division title in 2008.
West, who was inducted into the Xavier University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, was named the 2003 NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Pete Newell Big Man of the Year and won the 2003 Senior CLASS Award, a prestigious award that honors seniors who excel in the areas of community involvement, the classroom, character/leadership and competition. He signed with Golden State prior to the 2016-17 season after spending one season in San Antonio.
West, who had his No. 30 jersey retired at the end of his senior season, is ranked second on Xavier's all-time scoring list with 2,132 points, third on the all-time rebounding list with 1,308 rebounds and first in blocked shots with 228.
This marks the second straight year that a Xavier graduate has won an NBA Championship. Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach James Posey, a 1999 Xavier graduate, won an NBA Championship as a Cavs assistant coach in 2016. It was his third NBA Championship, having won an NBA title as a player with Boston in the 2007-08 season with teammates Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. Posey won his first NBA Championship in the 2005-06 season as a part of the Miami Heat, playing alongside Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal.
