Stewart Leads Five Musketeers in Double Figures, Xavier Tops Alabama State, 87-58

The sophomore guard scored a career-high 18 points on Tuesday night
CINCINNATI - Sophomore Princess Stewart scored a career-high 18 points on Tuesday night, leading the Musketeers to an 87-58 win over Alabama State at Cintas Center. The guard was one of five Musketeers in double figures as the Musketeers moved to 8-2 on the year.
• The first quarter had three ties and four lead changes. With the game tied 9-9 with 2:33 on the clock, the Musketeers went on an 8-2 run (3-for-3 FG) to take a 17-11 advantage into the second period. Xavier forced eight turnovers in the opening quarter, turning the miscues into nine points.
• Xavier found its offensive groove in the second quarter, hitting 66.7 percent (10-for-16) of its shot attempts to outscore the Hornets, 31-12, in the frame. The Musketeers also went 6-for-9 from behind the arc.
• Na'Teshia Owens led all scorers with 14 points in the first half on 5-for-6 shooting, including three 3-pointers. A'riana Gray added 10 points and three rebounds.
• Princess Stewart added seven rebounds, five steals, four assists and three rebounds. The Musketeers held a 16-2 advantage in points off of turnovers, while Alabama State had three more rebounds (20-17) than Xavier.
• Xavier hit 50 percent (8-for-16) of its shot attempts in the third quarter, outscoring Alabama State, 26-13. The Musketeers led by 38 points (74-36) at the end of three quarters.
• The Hornets outscored Xavier, 22-13, in the final stanza on 8-for-13 shooting, but Xavier maintained its double-figure lead despite the come-from-behind effort. Princess Stewart led Xavier with 11 points in the second half.
• Sophomore guard Princess Stewart scored a career-high 18 points on 6-for-14 shooting. She also added a career-high seven assists and steals to go along with five rebounds. Stewart is the first player with seven or more steals in a game since Dec. 8, 2016 at Wake Forest (Marquia Turner - eight steals).
• Four other Musketeers scored in double figures: Junior Na'Teshia Owens (15), sophomore Aaliyah Dunham (12), freshman Lauren Wasylson (12) and sophomore A'riana Gray (10). Xavier had five players score in double figures for the first time since Jan. 27, 2017 (at Seton Hall).
• Xavier also recorded a season-high 16 steals (sixth game with 10 or more steals) and a season-high 24 assists. The Musketeers also scored a season-high 28 points off of turnovers, forcing 21 Hornet miscues on the night.
• The Musketeers made a season-high 14 three pointers on the night, the team's fifth game of the season with 10 or more three pointers. Eight different players made a three pointer, paced by Lauren Wasylson who was 4-for-9 from behind the arc. The 14 three pointers are tied for second in single-game Xavier history.
• Xavier has now scored 80 or more points in a game four times this season. The Musketeers' season-high last season was 75 points against Furman on Dec. 17.
• Alabama State held a 41-37 advantage on the glass. Sophomore Deja Ross paced the Musketeers with six rebounds, while three other players had five rebounds in Lauren Wasylson, Princess Stewart and freshman Maddy Johnson.
• Xavier also held a 14-9 advantage in fastbreak points and a 33-31 advantage in bench points.
• Xavier returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 22 against New Orleans. Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m. from Cintas Center.
