Gray Posts Double-Double, Musketeers Fall in BIG EAST Opener at Georgetown

WASHINGTON - Xavier women's basketball dropped its BIG EAST opener at Georgetown on Saturday night, 68-61, at McDonough Arena. The Musketeers dropped to 9-3 (0-1 BIG EAST), while the Hoyas improved to 7-5 (1-0 BIG EAST).
Xavier led by as many as 16 points late in the first half before the Hoyas engineered the second-half comeback.
• Xavier jumped out to an early 16-6 lead at the 1:56 mark in the first quarter on a Lauren Wasylson three pointer. An Aaliyah Dunham three pointer - Xavier's fifth of the quarter - as time expired gave the Musketeers a 19-11 advantage after one quarter of play.
• The Musketeers opened the second frame on an 11-3 run to take their largest lead of the half, 30-14, with 3:51 on the clock. Xavier went 5-for-6 from the floor during the run. Georgetown held the Musketeers to only two points in the final 2:23 of the half to get within eight (35-27).
• Deja Ross led the team with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting at the half, while A'riana Gray added a team-high six rebounds. The Musketeers hit 50 percent (14-for-28) of their shot attempts with seven 3-pointers.
• Georgetown outscored Xavier, 27-12, in the third quarter on 10-for-19 shooting, while the Musketeers were limited to a .200 field-goal percentage (2-for-10). The Hoyas took their first lead of the game, 48-47, at the 1:45 mark on a Dionna White free throw. Georgetown led by seven (54-47) at the end of three quarters.
• Xavier battled back to get within three points (62-59) at the 3:26 mark on a Deja Ross three pointer before Georgetown responded by scoring five unanswered points to regain an eight-point lead. The Hoyas held on for the 68-61 win, winning their sixth straight over the Musketeers.
• Sophomore Deja Ross scored a team-high 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting with three 3-pointers. She added three rebounds and one block in 26 minutes of action. She has now scored in double figures five times during her career.
• Sophomore A'riana Gray posted her sixth double-double of the season and seventh of her career, scoring 12 points to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds. She added one block and one steal.
• Na'Teshia Owens, Princess Stewart and Tierra Floyd all chipped in eight points. Aly Reiff added four rebounds and a team-high three steals.
• Georgetown won the battle on the glass, 46-40, and scored seven more points (17-10) off of turnovers.
• The game featured two ties and only one lead change. Xavier led for 28 minutes in the game.
• The Musketeers continue BIG EAST action at Villanova on Monday, Dec. 31 at 1 p.m.
