Mack won multiple National Coach of the Year awards in 2015-16 season
CINCINNATI --- Xavier University's Chris Mack, the Sedler Family Men's Head Basketball Coach, has been named as one of the 10 national semifinalists for the 2018 Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year, announced today by The Atlanta Tipoff Club. This is not new territory for Mack, who won multiple major National Coach of the Year awards following the 2015-16 season.
Using this list of 10, the Naismith Awards master voting academy will identify the four finalists, to be announced on March 15. The Werner Ladder Naismith Trophy will be announced during the Naismith Awards brunch April 1 at Pearl Stable in San Antonio, Texas. Fans will be able to vote for their favorite coach by visiting naismithtrophy.com/vote between March 19-30 to cast their ballot, which will account for five percent of the final tally.
Xavier's ninth-year head coach is the all-time wins leader in school history with a 211-95 mark. Mack is on his way to leading Xavier to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time of his first nine seasons at the helm. His team earned a No. 1 seed on the NCAA Selection Committee's March Madness show earlier this month.
Xavier, which was ranked No. 17 in the preseason Associated Press Poll, has risen to No. 4 in the AP Poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll. Xavier has held the No. 4 spot two straight weeks, XU's 12th straight week in the top 15 of both major polls, including 10th in 12 weeks in the top 10. XU is No. 2 in the latest NCAA Official RPI. Xavier, 25-4 overall, leads the BIG EAST Conference with a 13-3 record.
Mack, who led Xavier to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2017, has led XU to at least the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 four times, including 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017. He is the only Xavier head coach that has led XU to four Sweet 16s. Mack has four more NCAA Tournament wins (10) than any XU head coach all-time and two more Sweet 16s.
Mack, the 2015-16 Henry Iba Award winner as the United State Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Coach of the Year, was also the CBS Sports and Basketball Times magazine National Coach of the Year. Mack is the only National Coach of the Year in program history. Mack led Xavier to its best-ever NCAA Tournament seed (2) in the 2015-16 season.
