Bluiett leads No. 5 Xavier in scoring and rebounding.
CINCINNATI – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today that Xavier University senior Trevon Bluiett is among the final 10 candidates for the 2018 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, the second year in a row he has made the final 10. Named after Hall of Famer and 11-time NBA All-Star Julius Erving, the annual honor in its fourth year recognizes the top small forwards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 21 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just 10.
In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Erving and the Hall of Fame's selection committee for the 2018 Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award. The winner will be honored at ESPN's College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, April 6, 2018.
Bluiett leads No. 5 Xavier, 22-3, and is fifth in the BIG EAST Conference in scoring at 19.4 ppg., while also leading the team in rebounding at 5.6 rpg., which ranks 16th in the BIG EAST. Bluiett, who is third in the BIG EAST in 3-point field goals per game at 3.1, has an active streak of 36 straight games scoring in double figures. Bluiett has scored 20 or more points in 14 games this season, including 26 points in the overtime win at Butler last night. He is in third place on XU's all-time scoring list with 2,071 career points and is just 61 points shy of second-place David West. West, the 2003 AP and USBWA National Player of the Year, scored 2,132 points in his career prior to his 2003 graduation.
Bluiett has earned plenty of honors this season. Bluiett was named recently to the John R. Wooden Award® presented by Wendy's® Late Season Top 20 list and the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the United States Basketball Writers Association award for college basketball's national player of the year. These are the latest in a list of midseason awards for Bluiett, who was named midseason Second Team All-American by NBC Sports and Sporting News. Bluiett is also on the watch list for the Naismith Trophy, the Lute Olson Award and the Senior CLASS Award.
