03.07.18 | Men's Basketball
Mack led Xavier to its first BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.
CINCINNATI - Xavier University ninth-year Head Coach Chris Mack was announced today as the 2018 BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year as selected by the league coaches. The Sedler Family Men's Head Basketball Coach led the Musketeers to sole possession of its first BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with a 15-3 league record and a 27-4 overall mark.
Â
This is not Mack's first conference coach of the year award. He was selected as the 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year.
Â
Mack, 48, is also a candidate for a number of national awards this season. The Atlanta Tipoff Club named Mack as one of the 10 national semifinalists for the 2018 Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year. This is not new territory for Mack, who won multiple major National Coach of the Year awards for the 2015-16 season. Mack, the 2015-16 Henry Iba Award winner as the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Coach of the Year, was also the CBS Sports and Basketball Times magazine National Coach of the Year.
Â
Mack, a 1992 Xavier University graduate, led Xavier to the NCAA Tournament in seven of his first eight seasons at the helm, including the NCAA Elite Eight in 2017. This year will be his eighth NCAA Tournament in nine years as the XU head coach, including his fifth straight. Mack has led XU to at least the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 four times, including 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017. He is the only Xavier head coach that has led XU to four Sweet 16s. Mack has four more NCAA Tournament wins (10) than any XU head coach all-time and two more Sweet 16s.
Â
No. 3/2 Xavier is the No. 1 seed in this week's BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden. XU plays its first game on Thursday at noon against the winner of the Georgetown/St. John's game on Wednesday.
