Xavier Baseball Celebrates Senior Day, Takes Down Villanova 8-6 in Regular Season Finale

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball celebrated Senior Day with an 8-6 win over visiting Villanova, clinching its final weekend series with three homers at Hayden Field on Saturday.
Xavier finished the 2018 season at 20-35 (7-11 BIG EAST), while Villanova ends its season at 9-39 (1-17 BIG EAST).
The Musketeers won on the strength of a six-run third inning and got homers from two seniors, Blaine Griffiths and Mitch Gallagher, to close out the year with three wins in their final four games.
With three more homers today, XU finishes the year with 68 longballs after breaking the old school record of 64 (1997) on Friday. Xavier has hit 129 home runs in the last two years -- the most in successive seasons in program history.
XU graduated a senior class that won 102 games, won a pair of BIG EAST Tournament titles and went to two NCAA Tournament regional finals in 2016 and 2017. The six man class of Joe Gellenbeck, Nate Soria, Blaine Griffiths, Christian Glass, Damien Richard and Mitch Gallagher was honored prior to first pitch.

• XU bashed three homers and plated eight runs on seven hits. The Musketeers broke out the bats in a big way this week, going 3-1 with 55 runs scored in four games.
• Xavier now has a homer in 19 of its last 25 games.
• Conor Grammes finished out his season with a 2-for-4 effort, scoring a run and driving in two.
• Joe Gellenbeck capped his XU career with a 1-for-3 day, scoring a run and driving in a run for his 154th career RBI. He finishes the season tied for sixth all-time in XU history in homers (32) and RBI (154).
• Blaine Griffiths had the big blast, smacking a three-run homer to left center as part of a six run third inning for XU.
• Sam Flamini had a 2-for-4 day, scoring twice and hitting a solo homer.
• Mitch Gallagher was 1-for-4 with a solo homer in his final game as a Musketeer.
• Chris Givin walked twice and scored a run despite being held hitless in three at bats. He finished the year leading XU with a .342 batting average and 45 RBI.

• Freshman Allbry Major got the start and gave XU seven innings of one-run ball, striking out five before running into trouble in the eighth and allowing a pair of homers. The righty finished his day with five earned runs allowed and eight hits in 7.1 innings, picking up the win to finish his season at 3-4 overall.
• Sean Douaire entered in relief, allowing one earned run in an inning.
• Freshman Evan Miller came on with one on and one out in the ninth, nailing down the win for his first career save to go with a strikeout.

Nate Soria followed with a ground out to first, moving both runners up a base. Conor Grammes batted next and singled to left center, scoring two runs and giving XU a 2-1 lead. Matt Warkentin then walked before a single to right by Joe Gellenbeck scored Grammes to make it 3-1. With two runners aboard, Blaine Griffiths crushed a three-run homer to left center to make it 6-1.
