Britton Concludes Standout Career at NCAA East Regional
05.25.18 | Track and Field
TAMPA, Fla. - Senior Madeline Britton wrapped up her standout career at the NCAA East Regional on Thursday night at the USF Track and Field Stadium.
Britton placed 22nd in the 10,000-meter run, posting a time of 34:52.76. The event served as one of two national semifinals (east and west regionals) as there is no preliminary race for the 10,000-meter run.
The Bay Village, Ohio, native was a two-time All-BIG EAST selection in cross country, earning first-team honors last fall after finishing eighth at the conference championships. She also competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last fall, becoming only the second student-athlete from Xavier to ever compete at the event.
Britton also competed at the NCAA East Regional in the 10,000-meter run in 2016. She finished her career ranked first in school history (XC) in the 5K record book and third in the 6K record book, respectively.
"Maddie ran really well tonight. She raced smart during the 1st half and put herself in the perfect position to contend for a top-12 spot. When she came through the 5k in 17:11 she was a little off the lead pack but I still thought she had a chance to make the top-12 if the last 3,000 meters went well. With 1,200 meters to go she was about 40 meters off of 12th place but there were a lot of girls between her and the 12th spot. Although she never fell apart during the race, she wasn't able to get back up with the top-12. She finished the race really strong over the last lap and ended up beating one of her high school rivals. I know she put 100 percent of what she had into the 10K tonight and I'm really proud of Maddie. She's done an amazing job of representing her team over the past four years and tonight was no different."
