06.20.18 | Baseball
CINCINNATI - Junior shortstop Chris Givin was named as one of four finalists for the 2018 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove Award on Tuesday, marking the first time a Xavier baseball player has been up for the prestigious award.
Givin is joined as a finalist by Tyler Depreta-Johnson (Houston Baptist), Cadyn Grenier (Oregon State) and Connor Kaiser (Vanderbilt).
The junior from Castle Rock, Colo. was rock solid defensively this season for the Musketeers making just two errors in 191 chances for a .990 fielding percentage at shortstop. Givin also helped turn 23 double plays as part of an XU defense that posted a .973 fielding percentage, which was fourth-best in program history.
Givin contributed with the bat as well, playing in 52 games and leading XU in batting average (.342), hits (75), triples (6), total bases (112) and RBI (45). His six triples ranked 15th in the nation and led the BIG EAST. Givin's hit total was second in the league.
Last week, Givin was named to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Mideast All-Region Second Team.
Xavier finished the season 20-35 overall and 7-11 in league play, missing the postseason for just the second time since 2014. XU has won the BIG EAST in three of its five years in the league, including back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.
The Rawlings Gold Glove winners have been selected since 2007 in the collegiate and high school ranks, featuring many future Major League Baseball players. The ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Awards are selected by ABCA coaches committees at each level.
