Â
"This meet is definitely going to be a test for our team. They've been home on winter break for a number of weeks and mostly practicing on their own. I've gotten good feedback from most of the athletes on how training went over break but as a coach you always wonder how they'll compete after being off from racing for so long. Although this meet is our first of 2019, we want to make our presence known. They'll be a lot of competitive teams but we expect our athletes to finish in the top-20 in their events and for some, top-10."
Â
• The BIG EAST Championships are slated for Feb. 22-23 in Geneva, Ohio. The two-day meet is being held at the SPIRE Institute. The 2016 and 2018 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships were also held at the SPIRE Institute.Â
• The Xavier women posted six top-10 times at the BIG EAST Championships last season, paced by All-BIG EAST performer Kara Robinson. The senior placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles.Â
• Xavier also returns sophomore Jenna Clayworth who placed eighth in the 5,000-meter run and 10th in the 3,000-meter run at the conference championships. Clayworth recently earned All-BIG EAST honors in cross country.Â
• On the men's side, the Musketeers had four top-10 finishes at the BIG EAST Championships. Chris Taylor returns for his junior season that saw him place fourth in the 60-meter dash at the indoor championships.Â
Â
• Head coach Ryan Orner announced the addition of Olympian David Payne as an assistant coach over the summer. Payne won a silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Â
• The Cincinnati native recently retired from his 10-year professional running career sponsored by Nike. In addition to the silver medal, he won the 2009 USA Championships in the 110-meter hurdles and won the bronze medal in the event at the 2007 and 2009 World Championships.
Â
• Payne graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2004 and Wyoming (Ohio) HS in 2000. He was two-time All-American for the Bearcats.
