CINCINNATI - True freshman Kody Darcy was selected as the BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year by Baseball America as the publication released its conference preview ahead of the 2019 season on Wednesday.
Darcy, a shortstop from Kent, Wash., was drafted in the 39th round by the New York Mets in the 2018 MLB Draft but elected to enroll in Xavier and will begin his first season with the program this spring.
As a senior at Kentridge High School, Darcy slashed .425/.511/.643 in 24 games. A 6-foot-1 right-handed swinger, he completed his high school career with a .359 career batting average and 23 stolen bases.
Baseball America picked the Musketeers to finish fourth overall, which was the same spot XU was picked in the BIG EAST preaseon poll. The preview also mentioned Conor Grammes as the fourth-ranked draft prospect in the league.
The Musketeers begin the 2019 season on Friday, Feb. 15 at North Carolina for a three-game series in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Musketeers return 20 letter-winners and six starters from last season's 20-35 team, which went 7-11 in the BIG EAST Conference and failed to reach the postseason for just the second time in five years. XU fought through a number of injuries and a lot of youth in its pitching staff last season, but should be poised for a bounce back in head coach Billy O'Conner's second season.
Xavier returns a number of standouts, including sophomore pitcher/outfielder Allbry Major, who took home All-BIG EAST Second Team, Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America and BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors. The Musketeers also return top hitters Conor Grammes (.330, 10 HR, 27 RBI) and Chris Givin (.342, 4 HR, 45 RBI) in addition to the power bat of Matt Warkentin, who hit 14 homers in his first season with the program last year.
