Women's Soccer Picks Up 3-0 Road Win at St. John's

Samantha Dewey scores game winner; Sroka and Thiss add insurance goals
QUEENS, N.Y. - Xavier women's soccer picked up the program's first result against St. John's on Sunday afternoon, topping the Red Storm 3-0 at Belson Stadium. The win was Xavier moved to 11-3-2 on the season and 4-2 in BIG EAST play.
Samantha Dewey scored the game-winner early, off a pass from Sydney Schembri in the first ten minutes of the match, taking the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Brooke Sroka added an insurance goal less than five minutes in to the second half, scoring again from Schembri after Carrie Lewis intercepted a SJU goal kick with a header, going ahead 2-0.
Maddie Thiss added third goal, off a saved shot from Jessica Miller, to set the final score at 3-0 in the closing minutes of the match,
Olivia Jenkins played the full time in-frame, picking up her fifth win of the season and her third shutout. Grace Bahr, Hayley Jakovich and Grace Brauer played the full 90 on the Xavier backline, limiting the Red Storm to just three shots, with only one on frame, for the Musketeers' ninth shutout of the season.
8' | XAVIER | Samantha Dewey got the ball around midfield, passing to Sydney Schembri, who brought the ball up right side. Schembri passed back to Dewey at the top of the box, and Dewey dribbled up to the six yard box then shot to the right corner for the 1-0 lead.
48' | XAVIER | Carrie Lewis used a header to send an SJU goal kick back toward's Xavier's attacking third. Sydney Schembri got a hold of hit, sending it to the left side. Brooke Sroka, from the edge of the 18-yard box, shot a up and over the SJU keeper to the right corner for the 2-0 lead.
88' | XAVIER | Courtney Lankford played the ball to Jessica Miller on the right side of the box. Miller shot low to the center of the net, forcing the SJU keeper to make a low save. The ball rebounded to Maddie Thiss on the left side of the net, shooting past the keeper who was off her feet for the 3-0 lead.

- Samantha Dewey's goal in the first 10 minutes was her 13th of the season, adding to her league high. Her goal total currently stands alone at fourth most in a single season in program history, just one off of third most, 14, currently held by Marla Schuerman from the 1990 season. The goal was her fourth game-winner of 2019.
- Brooke Sroka's goal in the 48th minute was her fourth of the season, all coming in BIG EAST action.
- Maddie Thiss' goal in the 88th minute was her first as a Musketeer.
- Sydney Schembri picked up a pair of assists to bring her season total to six points with a pair of goals.
- Carrie picked up her team-high eighth assist of the season on Sroka's goal, which is tied for fifth most assists in a season in program history.
- Jessica Miller picked up her first assist of 2019 on Maddie Thiss' goal after her shot bounced off the SJU goalkeeper's hands to set Thiss up for the goal.
- Xavier held a 20-3 advantage on shots, including a 12-1 advantage on shots on-frame. Molly McLaughlin led Xavier with three shots.
- Olivia Jenkins played the full 90 minutes in frame, collecting one save with three shots faced in her third shutout of the season. Jenkins is now 5-2-1 on the season.
- Grace Bahr, Hayley Jakovich and Grace Brauer played the full time on the Xavier backline, limiting the Red Storm to just three shots, matching St. John's season low.
- The win over St. John's is the program's first result against the Red Storm.
- Xavier's win is the 11th win of the season, the most for the program since Xavier's 12-win season in 2003.
- With nine shutouts, the 2019 Musketeers now match three other Xavier squads (1985, 1991, 2018) for the second most shutouts in program history.
