Musketeers Drop Road Contest at Temple on Thursday Night

Sophomore Carrie Gross matched her career-high in scoring (12) and rebounding (7)
PHILADELPHIA - Carrie Gross and A'riana Gray combined for 34 points and 16 rebounds on Thursday night as Xavier women's basketball dropped a 78-65 road game at Temple. Xavier moved to 1-1 on the year, while the Owls improved to 3-1.
• Temple jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the 7:20 mark in the first quarter before the Musketeers used a 15-5 run to close the quarter. Xavier led 15-14 after one quarter of play with A'riana Gray and Carrie Gross combining for 11 points and six rebounds.
• Temple responded with a 15-5 run of its own to open the second quarter, regaining a nine-point lead (29-20) with 4:16 left on the clock. Xavier scored five unanswered points capped by an A'riana Gray layup to get within four (29-25) at the 1:29 mark. The Owls hit a three pointer on the next possession before Na'Teshia Owens hit a layup as time expired, making the score 32-27 at the break.
• A'riana Gray led the Musketeers in scoring with 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting. Ayanna Townsend added six points.
• Carrie Gross had a team-high seven rebounds at the break to go along with five points.
• Xavier outscored Temple, 15-11, to start third quarter to close within one (43-42) at the 2:20 mark. The Musketeers regained the lead, 47-44, on a Na'Teshia Owens three pointer with 56 seconds left on the clock. Temple responded with a three pointer on its next possession to make the score, 47-47, at the end of three quarters. Xavier outscored Temple, 20-15, in the third stanza.
• The Musketeers opened the final frame by scoring five unanswered points capped by an Ashley Gomez basket to take its largest lead of the game, 52-47. The Owls responded by going on a 20-4 run over the next five minutes to take a, 67-56, advantage with 5:29 on the clock. Temple would outscore Xavier, 31-18, in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
• Junior A'riana Gray nearly missed her second straight double double, finishing with a team-high 22 points and nine rebounds. She added two blocks and two assists. She has now scored 20 or more points in a game eight times in her career.
• Sophomore Carrie Gross matched her career high in scoring (12) and rebounding (7). She was 4-for-10 from the floor and chipped in three assists.
• Junior Deja Ross added five rebounds, while senior Ashley Gomez recorded seven points and five rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
• Temple won the battle on the glass, 44-39, and had eight more (15-7) fastbreak points. The game featured six ties and 10 lead changes.
• Xavier continues its three-game road trip at Rider on Saturday, Nov. 16. Tip-off is slated for noon from Alumni Gymnasium.
