Tyrique Jones Posts Double-Double in Double Overtime Victory Against UConn

The Musketeers will face the Florida Gators in the Charleston Classic Championship on Sunday night.
CHARLESTON - After eight ties and seven lead changes, Xavier outlasts Connecticut, 75-74, in the semifinals of the Charleston Classic Friday night in double overtime. Three Musketeers scored in double figures, while Naji Marshall lead the way with 21 points. Tyrique Jones had a second consecutive double-double, posting 17 points and 11 rebounds. Paul Scruggs recorded 19 points and five rebounds. The Musketeers advance to the championship game on Sunday night against the Florida Gators.

FIRST HALF |
- UConn opened the game with a quick five points but the Musketeers responded by going on a 7-0 run into the first media timeout after a deep Jason Carter three and a big block by Quentin Goodin.
- A steal and a quick bucket from Paul Scruggs gave Xavier the advantage heading into the second media, 12-8.
- Tyrique Jones drew a foul under the basket earning two free throws to continue the Xavier lead at four 17-13 at the 8:46 mark.
- Back-to-back layups from Naji Marshall and Tyrique Jones extended the Xavier lead 22-17 with under six minutes remaining in the first half.
- Bryce Moore connected on a quick jumper out of the final media of the half, giving Xavier an 8-0 run and giving them their largest lead thus far, 26-17.
- Zach Freemantle stepped up on the defensive end, finishing the first half with two blocks.
- Xavier held UConn from field goal range scoreless for six minutes at the end of the half, embarking on an 8-2 run.
- A Tyrique Jones jumper at the buzzer gave the Musketeers a 10-point lead over the Huskies at the half, 31-21.
- Paul Scruggs and Tyrique Jones had nine points apiece at the half, while Jones added five rebounds.
- Xavier turned nine UConn turnovers into nine Musketeer points and six steals.

SECOND HALF |
- UConn opened the half bringing its deficit to three, before Paul Scruggs connected for two buckets to put Xavier back on top by five heading into the first media of the half, 35-30.
- The Huskies tied the game and reclaimed the lead at 38, during a 16-4 run, for the first time since the early minutes of the game with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
- Paul Scruggs answered with a shot-clock-beating three to tie the game at 38.
- UConn earned their largest lead, 39-45 at the 9:45 mark, which was quickly brought within three when Paul Scruggs connected on a triple that rolled around the rim, 42-45.
- UConn earned one free throw off a flagrant foul committed by Paul Scruggs, however Zach Freemantle responded to bring the Xavier deficit back to two with a hook shot, 44-46 with 6:28 to go.
- Out of the media, Dahmir Bishop grabbed the offensive board before finding Marshall for the and one, to bring the game within one, 47-48 with under six to play.
- Zach Freemantle had a big block from behind before hustling to the other end where Naji Marshall found him for the lay-in, 49-51 UConn.
- Naji Marshall tied the game at 56 for the Musketeers with a quick five points to send the game into overtime.

OVERTIME |
- Naji Marshall led Xavier in overtime, scoring all points included in the 7-0 run to open the third period and regain the Musketeer lead 60-58.
- Uconn went on a 5-0 run at the end of the first overtime to force a second overtime, tied at 65.

DOUBLE OVERTIME |
- Xavier led the way in the second overtime until a UConn jumper tied the game at 69. Bryce Moore responded with a quick three-pointer to give Xavier a 72-69 boost.
- UConn went up one with a jumper in the paint with 20 seconds remaining.
- Jason Carter sealed the victory for the Musketeers drawing a foul and hitting two free throws to clinch the victory, 75-74.

NOTABLES |
- Xavier shot 38 percent from the field, going 25-66 and 38 percent from beyond the acr, 9-24.
- The Musketeers forced 16 turnovers, converting those turnovers into 13 points .
- Freshman Zach Freemantle dominated on the defensive end, finishing with a game-high five blocks and five defensive rebounds.
- UConn's bench outscored Xavier 28-10, however the Musketeers out scored the Huskies on second chance opportunities 18-11.
