Gray Posts Double-Double, Xavier Falls to Friars on Friday Night

The sophomore forward had 20 points and 14 rebounds
CINCINNATI - Sophomore A'riana Gray posted her 13th double-double (20 points, 14 rebounds) of the season on Friday night as the Xavier women's basketball team dropped a 63-55 contest to Providence. The Musketeers moved to 11-13 (2-11 BIG EAST), while the Friars improved to 15-11 (7-7 BIG EAST).
• Providence scored three unanswered baskets to open the game, taking an 8-0 lead and forcing a Xavier timeout. The Friars kept up the hot shooting as they finished the frame with a .750 field-goal percentage (9-for-12) to take a 25-9 lead. A'riana Gray paced the Musketeers with eight points on 3-for-5 shooting in the first quarter.
• Xavier started the second quarter on a 4-0 behind back-to-back baskets from Carrie Gross and Deja Ross.The Musketeers went 6-for-14 from the floor in the frame, outscoring the Friars, 17-15. A fastbreak layup from Aaliyah Dunham as time expired was the final basket of the half.
• A'riana Gray led the Musketeers with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting in the first half. She added a team-high five rebounds.
• Providence held a 13-9 advantage on the glass at the break and had seven more points off of turnovers (16-9) than the Musketeers.
• Xavier scored four unanswered points to open the half, closing within 10 points (40-30) of the Friars. The Musketeers got within eight points twice in the quarter before making the score, 53-44, with three seconds on the clock on a Carrie Gross layup. Xavier outscored Providence, 18-13, in the third quarter.
• The Musketeers closed within five points, 60-55, on an Aaliyah Dunham layup with 41 seconds left in regulation. Providence scored three free throws down the stretch to hold off the Xavier comeback and escape Cintas Center with the 63-55 win.
• Xavier outscored Providence, 11-10, in the final quarter. Freshman Carrie Gross scored eight points on 4-for-5 shooting to lead the Musketeers in scoring in the second half.
• Sophomore A'riana Gray posted her BIG EAST leading 13th double-double of the year. She was 7-for-19 from the floor and 4-for-7 from the foul line. She now has four career 20-point performances.
• Sophomore A'riana Gray had a team-high four steals. The Musketeers posted 10 steals, the team's ninth game of the year with 10 or more steals. Xavier forced 19 turnovers, converting the miscues into 15 points.
• Freshman Carrie Gross matched her career high in scoring with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting. She added two rebounds, one steal and one assist in 21 minutes of action off the bench.
• Sophomore Aaliyah Dunham scored 10 points and dished out a team-high six assists. She chipped in two steals and one rebound.
• Providence won the battle on the glass, 32-20, and had six more points off of turnovers (21-15).
• The Musketeers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 17 against Creighton. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Cintas Center.
