The Musketeers move from second-place on final day to claim title
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - Xavier men's swimming claimed the 2019 BIG EAST Championship on Saturday evening, coming from behind to pass Georgetown on the final day of the competition. Xavier's women held strong in second-place, finishing runners-up, the highest finish since joining the conference in 2013.
Xavier's men collected six BIG EAST event Championships over the course of the four-day meet, including four of the five relays, to finish with 779.5 points, topping second place Georgetown by 35 points. It's the fourth BIG EAST Championship for the Xavier men, who won three straight from 2014-2016.
Xavier's women finished the meet with one event championship, the 200 medley relay, marking the first relay championship for the women's program. The Musketeers finished with 662 points, a program best since joining the BIG EAST, for the second-place finish to champions Villanova. The finish is the best since joining the BIG EAST and ties the program best finish in 2008 when the Musketeers were Atlantic 10 runners up.

SATURDAY: MEN'S NOTABLE |
- Nick Mahoney led the Musketeers in the mile, finishing fourth with a time of 15:51.30 to place fourth. Patrick Hackett finished top six with a time of 16:07.63. Cothalee Watko placed 10th in the timed final.
- After setting a new school record in the 200 back during the morning's prelims, Nathan Runyon topped that time during finals, finishing 1:45.93 to place third. Alex Sironen finished fourth and Ben Quon, Chase Baldwin and Nick Mahoney rounded out the top eight to help the Musketeers move into first place in the team standings.
- Sam Johanns set the top overall time in the prelims of the 100 free, 44.64 to earn the top seed. His finals time of 44.81 was good for second place. David Bunnell touched just behind him in third. Christian Thomas finished fifth and Enrique Hernandez finished eighth in the Championship final.
- Jared Ritz and Matthew Geraghty competed in the B-Final of the 100 free, placing 12th and 13th respectively.
- Matthew Dyer set the top time in the prelims of the 200 breast, and upped that time to 2:00.11 in the finals to take second. Cameron Weese touched just behind him in third.
- Landon Clark took the top seed in the 200 fly during prelims and repeated the feat in finals, finishing in 1:49.20 to take first. Brandon Abboud finished fourth in the Championship final.
- Patrick Hackett competed in B-Final of the 200 fly, placing 15th.
- Xavier closed out the meet with a time of 3:00.24 in the 400 free relay for Sam Johanns, Christian Thomas, Brandon Abboud and David Bunnell to take first and secure the conference championship.

SATURDAY: WOMEN'S NOTABLE |
- Tilly Baldwin topped the program record in the timed final of the mile, finishing in 17:01.28 to place fourth.
- Emma Kauffeld placed seventh, Katie Kerr finished 10th and Becca Titterton finished 14th in the mile.
- Caroline Gaertner took second in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.15.
- Ali Fort took the top time in the B-Final of the 200 back with a time fo 2:00.63. Anne Locker also competed in the B-Final, placing 12th.
- Emily Conners led the Musketeers win the 100 free with a time of 50.01 to finish third. Emily Saugstad finished eighth in the Championship final.
- Tianna Vozar led a trio of Musketeers in the B-Final of the 100 free, placing 10th. Abby Garner finished 13th and Maureen Cummins finished 14th.
- Becca Titterton led the Musketeers in the 200 breast with time of 2:20.74 to place fourth. Alison Herman finished sixth in the Championship final.
- Lydia Schaeffer took the top time in the B-Final of the 200 breast with a time of 2:22.10.
- Taylor Hogan's time of 2:01.79 led Xavier in the 200 fly, finishing third. Annie Cummins placed eighth in the Championship final.
- Maggie Kauffeld competed in the B-Final of the 200 fly, placing 11th.
- Xavier closed out the meet with a tie of 3:23.49 in the 400 free relay to finish second, and secure the runners-up position.
