Musketeers Fall at No. 11 Marquette on Sunday Afternoon

Sophomore A'riana Gray led Xavier with 21 points and eight rebounds
MILWAUKEEÂ -Â Xavier women's basketball dropped its final BIG EAST road game of the season, 79-53, at No. 11 Marquette on Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers moved to 11-16 (2-14 BIG EAST) on the year, while the Golden Eagles improved to 23-5 (14-2 BIG EAST).

• Xavier led 7-6 in the opening minutes of the game before Marquette outscored Xavier, 19-8, to take a 10-point lead (25-15) into the second quarter. Marquette hit 56.3 percent (9-for-16) of it shots in the opening frame with six 3-pointers. Xavier was 6-for-15 from the floor as A'riana Gray and Lauren Wasylson paced the squad with six points each.
• Both teams struggled offensively midway through the second quarter as both teams only scored four points, making the score 29-19 at the media timeout (4:54). Marquette outscored Xavier, 16-12, in the frame to take a 41-27 lead into the locker room.
• A'riana Gray led the Musketeers with 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting at the break. Aaliyah Dunham and Lauren Wasylson both added six points.Â
• Marquette held a 23-11 advantage on the glass and had eight more points off of turnovers (8-0). A'riana Gray led the Musketeers on the glass with four rebounds.

• Marquette hit back-to-back three pointers to open the second half, taking its first 20-point advantage (47-27) and forcing a Xavier timeout. All told, the Golden Eagles scored 11 unanswered points to open the half on 4-for-6 shooting. Xavier responded by using a 4-0 run to make the score 52-31 at the 5:44 mark. The Golden Eagles maintained its 20-point advantage for the remainder of the quarter, taking a 62-40 advantage into the final frame.
• Marquette outscored Xavier, 17-13, in the final quarter to make the final score, 79-53. The Golden Eagles clinched at least a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Title with the win.

• A'riana Gray led the Musketeers in scoring with 21 points on 10-for-23 shooting. The sophomore forward has now scored 20 or more points in a game five times in her career.
• A'riana Gray led the Musketeers on the glass with eight rebounds, while Deja Ross and Aaliyah Dunham both added four. Marquette won the battle on the glass, 46-26.
• Aaliyah Dunham chipped in 10 points on 3-for-8 shooting. The sophomore guard now has 14 career double-figure scoring games. She added a team-high four assists.
• Deja Ross added eight points on 3-for-4 shooting, while Princess Stewart and Lauren Wasylson both chipped in six. Stewart also dished out four assists.Â
• Xavier forced 19 turnovers, a season-high for the Golden Eagles. The Musketeers also had five steals in the game, paced by Ashley Gomez who had a game-high three steals.

• The Musketeers close out BIG EAST regular-season action on March 1-3 at Cintas Center. Xavier takes on Villanova on Friday night at 7 p.m. on FS2 and Georgetown on Sunday at 2 p.m.
