NEW YORK - Sophomore Nick Zwack was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon after a solid start in XU baseball's win over Samford on Saturday. Teammate Matt Warkentin also got a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod following a monster weekend at the plate.
Zwack, a Monticello, Minn. native, picked up the win with 5.1 innings of one-run ball in Saturday's 7-1 win over Samford. The lefty struck out six and scattered seven hits. The only run he allowed was solo homer in the sixth.
Zwack has been solid in a pair of weekend starts for the Musketeers, recording a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings as the Saturday starter.
Warkentin broke out of an opening weekend slump in a big way, swatting three homers and scoring seven times while hitting .583 (7-for-12) in the three-game series. The senior first baseman added seven RBI and led XU with 16 total bases in the series, posting a .667 on-base percentage.
Warkentin homered twice in Friday's opener, going 3-for-5 with four RBI in a 10-7 loss. On Saturday, he was perfect at the dish putting up a 2-for-2 line with four runs scored and two walks. He also went 2-for-5 with a game-tying three run homer in a narrow 10-9 loss in the series finale on Sunday.
Xavier returns to action on Tuesday, facing No. 8 Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium.
