Sophomore Deja Ross had seven points, five rebounds and two steals on Friday night
INDIANAPOLIS - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 63-38 BIG EAST game at Butler on Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Musketeers moved to 11-12 (2-10 BIG EAST) on the year, while Butler improved to 18-5 (8-4 BIG EAST).
• Butler hit its first seven shots of the game, taking an early 16-6 lead to force a Xavier timeout. Defensively, the Musketeers held the Bulldogs without a field-goal (0-for-5) for the remainder of the quarter. The Bulldogs led the Musketeers, 19-8, after one quarter of action.
• Princess Stewart hit a three pointer to open the second quarter before Butler scored six unanswered points to take a 25-11 advantage and force a Xavier timeout. The Bulldogs outscored Xavier, 15-11, in the second frame to take a 34-19 lead into the locker room.
• Deja Ross and Aaliyah Dunham paced the Musketeers with six points each, while Princess Stewart added five. A'riana Gray led the team on the glass with five rebounds, while adding a team-high two steals. Butler held a 17-13 advantage in rebounding and had 11 more points off of turnovers (14-3).
• Butler opened the second half on an 11-0 run before outscoring Xavier, 18-11, in the frame to take a 52-30 lead into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs outscored Xavier, 11-8, in the final frame to make the final score, 63-38.
• The 38 points were a season low for the Musketeers. Xavier also posted a season-low 14 field goals (14-for-50).
• Sophomores Princess Stewart and A'riana Gray led the team in scoring with eight points each. Classmate Deja Ross added seven points, while Aaliyah Dunham and Lauren Wasylson both chipped in six. Dunham also dished out a team-high four assists.
• Sophomore A'riana Gray paced the team on the glass with a game-high 10 rebounds, her 16th game of the year with 10 or more rebounds. She added a team-high three steals. Sophomore Deja Ross added two steals and five rebounds.
• The Musketeers hit nine 3-pointers in the game with five different players making a shot from behind the arc. Deja Ross, Aaliyah Dunham and Lauren Wasylson each had two 3-pointers.
• Butler won the battle on the glass, 37-28, and held a 26-8 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Musketeers held a 10-7 advantage in second-chance points.
• The Musketeers return to action against Providence on Friday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. with the game being aired nationally on FS2.
