"This is one of the youngest but most talented groups that I've taken on the California trip. With six of the seven being freshman or sophomores, part of their experience will be learning how to race in large packs and push themselves within the packs to race to their potential. All seven of the athletes have the potential to establish an NCAA first round qualifying mark, but this trip is more than just hitting a time. It's about realizing your potential, building confidence and leaving with a clear path to their goals."
Â
"On the women's side, Jennie Prial has a great opportunity in the steeplechase. We made some significant corrections to her water jumps in the past week that I think will make the difference between where she's at now and contending for a trip to NCAA's. Anna Kostarellis will have a long week of racing that will start with a 5,000m on Thursday night. She's capable of dropping a lot of time from her personal best of 17:01 as long as she's patient within the first half of the race and aggressive in the second half. Anna will probably run a steeplechase on Friday morning to better her position within the Big East and conclude with a 1500 at the end of the trip. Also on Thursday night, Jenna Clayworth will race her first 10,000m. As a freshman last year we kept her out of the event to focus on the 5k, but I believe the 10k could be her best event in the future. Although she hasn't raced much since cross country, I needed to get her into a 10k now to start making steps towards reaching her goals in the event before the end of sophomore year."
Â
"On the men's side, Tom Gardiner will start us off in the 1500 on Friday night. Having a large pack with guys all around the same time will be a new experience for Tom but one that he needs now so he can start adjusting his race tactics in years to come. He's a super talented guy so if he can get the race tactics down this week; he'll be on his way to some significant accomplishments in years to come. Jacob Lough is also a freshman star that I took on the trip in the 800. Although Jacob hasn't had much exposure at this level, he has a natural ability to navigate complex races. Jacob's success this weekend comes down to two things; how fresh are his legs and does the pack take him out fast enough through 400. If those two factors are there, he's ready for a big breakthrough. Next, sophomore Will Roberts will be racing the 400 hurdles. Will has been on fire lately, breaking school records and establishing himself as one of the best in the Big East. Racing in California will be an excellent opportunity for Will to get pulled along and pushed by faster competition. He hasn't run a 400 hurdles fresh yet this season, so I'm excited to see what he can do. Finally, Grant Stapleton, the loan upperclassmen will be racing the 800. Grant has been a top-8 contender in the Big East for several years now and has the talent to make it to the next level. If Grant can stay calm and collected before the gun goes off, he should be able to crack our school record and solidify the goal he's had since freshman year."
