05.18.19 | Baseball
NEW YORK – Xavier baseball secured the No. 2 seed in next week's BIG EAST Championship with results around the league today. The Musketeers will co-host the tournament, held at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio, from Thursday, May 23 through Sunday, May 26.
The Musketeers will open play on Thursday evening against St. John's in the second game of the day, set to begin at approximately 6:30 PM. Xavier went 2-1 against the Red Storm earlier this season in Queens, N.Y.
Xavier went 12-4 in BIG EAST play, securing series wins against five of six league opponents. The Musketeers secured three sweeps, including going 3-0 against Georgetown and 2-0 against Butler and Villanova in rain-shortened series. The Musketeers claimed 2-1 records against Creighton and St. John's. Xavier's lone series loss came against Seton Hall, taking one of the three-game series against the Pirates.
With the rain cancellations, Xavier played two fewer BIG EAST games than originally scheduled, finishing BIG EAST play last weekend with a .750 winning percentage in league match-ups. With this weekend's sweep of Villanova, Creighton finishes 14-4, with a .778 winning percentage in BIG EAST play to earn the No. 1 seed. St. John's earned the No. 3 seed with a series sweep of Seton Hall this weekend, with both teams sitting at 9-9 in conference play.
The Musketeers secured a berth to the four-team BIG EAST Championship last weekend, marking the fourth time in six seasons Xavier has claimed a spot in the league tournament. In each of Xavier's previous three appearances (2014, 2016, 2017) the Musketeers have won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship.
