Richards, Burton score to erase 2-0 deficit and send match to OT
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Xavier women's soccer battled back to erase a 2-0 second half deficit and force extra time, but fell, 3-2, to Missouri in double overtime on Sunday. The setback is the Musketeers' first of the season as Xavier moves to 2-1-1 for the 2019 campaign.
Missouri took the lead early, scoring in the opening minutes after getting possession immediately after first touch. Xavier responded with a number of chances, leading 6-3 on shots, and 3-1 on looks on-frame, in the first half, but were unable to score before the break, going into halftime down 1-0.
Missouri added to the lead early in the second half, scoring off a set piece to go ahead 2-0. Xavier responded with a goal from Jackie Richards less than 10 minutes later, cutting the lead to one, 2-1.
The Missouri lead held until the closing minute of regulation, when Emily Burton took advantage of the Missouri goalkeeper losing her footing, finishing from just in front of the box to tie the match, 2-2, and send it to overtime.
The draw held through the first overtime period and six minutes into the second until a Xavier yellow yard in the box gave the Tigers a penalty kick. Missouri scored the golden goal to win 3-2.
