Meet the Newcomers: Men's Swimming

CINCINNATI - Prior to the kick-off of the 2019-20 season, meet Xavier men's swimming's roster additions. Xavier added nine to the defending BIG EAST Champions' roster, Jon Bernard, Andrew Devine, Davis Klein, Andrew Martin, Joey Mullen, Will Serad, Matt Williams, Brett Wilson and Ethan Wing.
Jon Bernard
Bernard comes to Xavier from Maineville, Ohio and is a graduate of St. Xavier High School. The breast, back and IM specialist also swam for the Mason Manta Rays.
In each of his four years at St. Xavier the squad GCL, OHSAA DI and NISCA National Champions. Bernard capped off his high school career with two top six finishes at the OHSAA D1 State Championship, taking fifth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 IM.
Bernard was a NISCA High School All-American in the 100 breast and earned academic All-America honors from both the NISCA and USA Swimming. He qualified for and competed at both the Winter and Summer Speedo Junior Nationals.
Bernard is majoring in Biomedical Sciences with a minor in Psychology. He is the son of Mary and Thomas Bernard and has a younger sister, Alison.
Andrew Devine
Devine joins the Musketeers from Milford, Ohio. He's a graduate of St. Xavier High School and competed with Cincinnati Aquatic Club and the Cincinnati Marlins.
Devine was a four-year member of the varsity team at St. Xavier, competing as part of the four-time GCL, OHSAA D1 State and NISCA National Championship squads.
Devine was a three-time qualifier for the OHSAA D1 State Championship, and earned first team all-city in 2017 and 2019.
Devine is majoring at Biomedical Sciences at Xavier. He is the son of Jay Devine and Krista Raffle-Devine. He has two younger siblings, Matthew and Alex.
Davis Klein
Klein comes to Saline, Mich., is a graduate of Saline High School and competed with Club Wolverine in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Klein was a three-time qualifier for the MHSAA Boys Division 1 State Championship, capping off his career with a third-place finish in the 200 IM and a fifth-place finish in the 100 breast in 2019 to help his squad to a third-place finish. Klein was also the SEC Men's Red Division Champion in the 200 IM.
With Club Wolverine, Klein capped off his career as a three-time finalist in the 2019 Michigan Swimming Open Championship, in the 200 IM, 100 breast and 100 back. Klein collected a second-place finish in the 200 IM, placed fourth in the 100 breast and finished seventh in the 100 back with a personal best time as Club Wolverine took the team title.
Andrew Martin
Martin comes to Xavier from Middleton, Wisc., where he competed with Middleton High School and Badger Aquatic Club, specializing in in distance free events.
Martin spent four years on the varsity team at Middleton, helping the team to back-to-back runners-up finishes at the WIAA Boys Division 1 State Championship in 2018 and 2019. He was a three-time state qualifier and as a senior, Martin claimed the state Championship in the 500 free and finished second in the 200 free after claiming the sectional title in both. Martin also claimed a state title and record as part of the 200 free relay.
With his club squad, Martin capped off his career with a pair of short course state championships, in the 500 free and 1000 free at the Wisconsin Swimming 13 & Over Championships, and then took the 1500 free title at the Long Course State Championship.
Martin is majoring in Marketing at Xavier. He's the son of Kristin and Sean Martin and has a sister, Norah.
Joey Mullen
Mullen comes to Xavier from Massillon, Ohio where he competed for Canton Central Catholic High School and with Canton City Schools, excelling in free sprints and butterfly.
Mullen is a four-time qualifier for the OHSAA State Championships. He capped off his high school career by winning the state championship in the 50 free, and also collected a fifth-place finish in the 100 fly. He also was a state finalist in the 100 fly as a sophomore, finishing sixth. He was named the team's Most Valuable swimmer four times.
With Canton City Schools, Mullen competed in the Speedo Champions Series in each the last three years and at the NCSA Spring Junior National Championships in 2018 and 2019.
Mullen was named a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American in 2018 and Academic All-American in 2019. He plans on majoring in Physical Therapy and Psychology at Xavier.
Will Serad
Serad comes to Xavier from Crestwood, Ky., where he competed with South Oldham High School and Triton Swimming, excelling in distance freestyle and IM.
Serad was a five-year member of the varsity team at South Oldham, winning five regional championships, including three straight in the 500 free and titles in the 200 free and 200 IM. Serad was twice a KHSAA State Championship finalist in the 500 free, placing eighth as a junior and fourth as a senior.
Serad capped off his career with Triton Central by taking the state championship at the Kentucky 13 & Over Long Course Championships, one of six events he was a finalist in at the meet (500 free, 1000 free, 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 IM).
Serad was named USA Swimming Scholastic All-America following his high school career.
Serad is majoring in Finance at Xavier. He's the son of William Serad and Stacy Serad.
Matt Williams
Williams comes to Xavier from Gibraltar, Mich., where he specialized in breast, IM and free sprints for O. A. Carlson High School and Club Wolverine.
With O. A. Carlson, Williams was a three-time qualifier for the MHSAA Boys State Championships three times. He was a two-time Downriver League champion in the 100 breast and 200 IM, with the team taking the league title in each year. He finished top eight in both events at the MHSAA State Championship, including grabbing a second-place finish in the 100 breast and fifth-place finish in the 200 IM.
With Club Wolverine, Williams was part of four Michigan Short Course State Championship teams and the 2018 NCSA Summer Swimming Championship.
Williams is majoring in Political Science at Xavier. He's the son of Mike and Cathy Williams, and has two brothers, Joe and Tim.
Brett Wilson
Wilson comes to Xavier from Olympia, Wash., and is a graduate of Olympia High School. Wilson competed with Evergreen Swim Club where he specialized in distance free and backstroke.
With Evergreen, Wilson was a four-time finalist at the Pacific Northwest Swimming Senior Long Course Championships in July 2018, collecting a second-place finish in the 200 back, a pair of third-place finishes in the 800 free and 1500 free and a fifth place finish in the 400 free.
Wilson was also a three time finalist at the Washing Senior Short Course Championships, in the 100 free in 2016 and in the 100 free and 1650 free in 2017.
In August 2018, Wilson was named a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
Ethan Wing
Wing comes to Xavier from Valparaiso, Ind. where he competed for Chesterton High School and Duneland Swim Club.
Wing capped off his career with Chesterton with an undefeated season in dual matches, claiming the IHSAA Sectional Championship for a 21st and placing fourth as a team at the State Championship.
During that run, Wing was a two-time sectional champion, in the 50 free and the 100 free, and was a state finalist in the 100 free.
With Duneland, Wing finished out his career in July at the Indiana Senior State Long Course championships with personal-best times in four events.
Wing is planning to major in Business at Xavier. He's the son of Ed and Natalie Wing. He has an older sister, Aubrey Wing, who swims for IUPUI.
Jon Bernard
Maineville, Ohio
Bernard comes to Xavier from Maineville, Ohio and is a graduate of St. Xavier High School. Davis Klein
Saline, Mich.
Klein comes to Saline, Mich., is a graduate of Saline High School and competed with Club Wolverine in Ann Arbor, Mich.Klein was a three-time qualifier for the MHSAA Boys Division 1 State Championship, capping off his career with a third-place finish in the 200 IM and a fifth-place finish in the 100 breast in 2019 to help his squad to a third-place finish. Andrew Martin
Middleton, Wisc.
Martin comes to Xavier from Middleton, Wisc., where he competed with Middleton High School and Badger Aquatic Club, specializing in in distance free events.Martin spent four years on the varsity team at Middleton, helping the team to back-to-back runners-up finishes at the WIAA Boys Division 1 State Championship in 2018 and 2019. With his club squad, Martin capped off his career with a pair of short course state championships, in the 500 free and 1000 free at the Wisconsin Swimming 13 & Over Championships, and then took the 1500 free title at the Long Course State Championship.
Martin is majoring in Marketing at Xavier. He's the son of Kristin and Sean Martin and has a sister, Norah.
Joey Mullen
Massillon, Ohio
