CINCINNATIÂ - Xavier University Athletics inducted an outstanding five-member 2019-20 induction class into the Xavier University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, January 10, 2020 at Cintas Center. The class was also honored at halftime of the men's basketball game against Creighton on Saturday.
This year's class includes a pair of men's basketball players who led Xavier to championship success and enjoyed tremendous professional careers after graduation, Justin Doellman ('07) and Michael Hawkins ('95). Nick Hagglund ('14) helped lead the Xavier men's soccer program into the national spotlight and after graduation has won an MLS championship in Toronto and is currently playing for MLS expansion club FC Cincinnati. Scott Gordon ('89) was one of the most versatile talents to ever play on the XU baseball diamond and Katie Pleiman ('13) earned First Team All-Conference in tennis and played No. 1 singles each of her four years on the Xavier campus. Both Gordon and Pleiman earned Academic All-America honors.
Â
Â
Justin Doellman, who started all four years as a Musketeer basketball standout, was a part of three NCAA Tournament teams, including as a freshman starter for XU's first-ever NCAA Elite Eight team in 2004.
Â
Doellman was a starter on the Xavier teams that won four Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament games on the way to A-10 Championships in 2004 and 2006 as well as berths in the 2004 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, the 2007 NCAA Tournament Second Round and the 2006 NCAA First Round. The 2004 squad, which ended the season on what XU fans still refer to as The Run, defeated then undefeated and No. 1 St. Joseph's 87-67 as part of the A-10 Tournament performance. XU defeated Louisville, Mississippi State and Texas in the 2004 NCAA Tournament before falling 66-63 to Duke in the Musketeers' first-ever NCAA Regional Final appearance.
Â
Doellman started in 123 games out of a possible 132 for his career. Doellman, Xavier's leading rebounder and shot blocker for each of his final three seasons, ranks third in Xavier history for blocked shots with 140 blocks, 20th in rebounding with 708 rebounds and 21st on XU's all-time scoring list with 1,402 points. Doellman, a 2006-07 First Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection, enjoyed a breakout senior year by leading Xavier with 13.7 points per game, 5.5 rebounds a contest and 1.15 blocks per game. He posted career-highs against Rhode Island his senior year with 29 points on 10 made field goals.Â
Â
Doellman has enjoyed a great career playing professionally overseas, including being named MVP of the Spanish League in 2014. Doellman, MVP of the 2014 Eurocup Championship, won the 2014 Eurocup with former XU teammate Romain Sato. He just completed his 12th year of professional basketball, including the last eight seasons in Spain.
Â
Scott Gordon, a 1989 Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-American, was a 1989 First Team All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference honoree. Gordon was one of the most versatile talents ever to wear a Xavier baseball uniform. The right-hander excelled as a pitcher, first baseman and outfielder during his four-year career at XU. His senior season he played 56-of-57 games, earning 11 starts and pitching in 10 complete games on the mound in addition to 45 other games, mainly as a designated hitter but also as a first baseman and outfielder. Gordon compiled a 6-5 record, including two shutouts over Dayton and key victories over Miami of Ohio, Toledo, Central Florida and Detroit to go with a team-best 3.17 ERA.
Â
As an underclassman, Gordon was the primary stopper out of the bullpen. He tallied a then school-record 17 saves his first three years (now ranks third all-time), including a then single-season record of eight during his rookie season when XU finished 29-28. The Musketeers posted a then school-record 32 wins (32-21) the following year as Gordon earned six saves.
Â
Gordon compiled a .327 career batting average in 172 career games during his four seasons at Xavier, including .384 as a senior. The 1989 First Team All-MCC designated hitter is fourth on Xavier's list for RBIs in a season with 60 and ranks tied for third for walks in a season with 48.
Â
Gordon excelled for the Musketeers both on the field and in the classroom. The 1987 Third Team Academic All-American was chosen for the 1989 O'Connor Award as Xavier's top male senior student-athlete. Following graduation he was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 15th round of the 1989 MLB Draft. After finishing his baseball career, Gordon served in the United States Marine Corps, reached the rank of Captain in 1997, while fighting in Bosnia, Somalia and the Gulf War.  Â
Â
Â
Nick Hagglund enjoyed the most decorated career in Xavier soccer history. Hagglund, who earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America Second Team honors and College Soccer News All-America Third Team honors in 2012, was named First Team All-Conference three times. He also holds the distinction of being the highest drafted XU player ever in the MLS SuperDraft.
Â
Hagglund , who earned conference defensive player of the year honors in the Atlantic 10 in 2012 and the BIG EAST in 2013, was a part of 31 shutouts as the leader of the Musketeer defense over his four years in the program. He led Xavier to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012. XU picked up its first-ever NCAA Tournament win in 2012 with a victory at Kentucky.
Â
After his freshman season, Hagglund was named to both the 2010 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship All-Tournament Team. The following season, he earned a spot on the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic First Team.
Hagglund, a preseason All-America first team selection and on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to his junior and senior seasons, earned a spot at the end of his junior year on the 2012 College Soccer News All-America Third Team and the 2012 NSCAA All-America Second Team. The NSCAA honors set him apart as the first Musketeer player to ever earn the honor. He earned the 2013 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year award in XU's first BIG EAST season as well as a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team and the NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region Second Team.
Â
Hagglund, who was the 10th overall pick by Toronto FC in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, won an MLS Cup with Toronto FC in 2017. He was acquired by FC Cincinnati in a trade in January of 2019, joining FCC for its first season as an expansion franchise in the MLS.
Â
Michael Hawkins, a member of the 1991-92 Midwestern Collegiate Conference All-Newcomer Team and the 1994-95 All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference Second Team, helped Xavier reach two NCAA Tournaments and one NIT Quarterfinal during his four-year career. The 1994-95 Musketeers finished 14-0 as champions of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, XU's final season in the MCC.
Â
Hawkins, who ranks 52nd on Xavier's All-Time scoring list with 1,029 points, played three different positions early in his career, but was firmly planted in his natural position of point guard during his senior season by the late Skip Prosser, who was then the first-year head coach at Xavier. Hawkins blossomed after being given the reigns by Prosser. Hawkins led the Musketeers in assists at 5.8 per game as a senior, ranking second in the MCC, including a career-high 13 at Cleveland State. He was second on the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game, which ranked 14th in the MCC. Hawkins led the Musketeers in assists in three of his four seasons at Xavier and ranks eighth on Xavier's all-time assist leaderboard with 448. He connected on 154 three-point field goals in his career, which tied a school record set by Jamie Gladden that was later broken.Â
Â
Hawkins played professional basketball and represented Team USA after his graduation. Hawkins spent four seasons in the NBA, including stops in Charlotte, Sacramento, Cleveland and Boston. Hawkins was a key member of Team USA for two straight summers, including winning a Bronze Medal during the 1998 World Championship Games. Hawkins is the only Xavier player to ever play more than one year for USA Basketball. In total, Hawkins played 11 years professionally, including two years in the CBA, four years in the NBA and five years Europe.
Â
Katie Pleiman (Grabosky) had one of the greatest careers in Xavier women's tennis program history, piling up many awards during her career as the No. 1 singles player all four years. Pleiman was a four-time all-conference selection, winning at least 15 matches each season to amass an overall record of 63-17 in dual matches. With open matches included, Pleiman graduated with an overall record of 80-26 in singles matches, which stood as seventh best at the time of her graduation in number of wins, and her winning percentage of .755 ranked sixth when she graduated among Xavier players who had played in at least 40 matches.
In doubles, Pleiman amassed 64 wins, a number that ranked 12th in Xavier's record books at the time of her graduation. Of her 64 wins, 24 came from playing in the No. 1 spot in dual matches.
Pleiman was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in 2010, and she earned a place on the Atlantic 10 Conference First Team in each of her four seasons at XU. She only lost two conference matches in all four years and was undefeated in the conference tournament, leading the team to the finals her junior and senior year. While a junior, Katie was the first-ever Musketeer to compete at the All-American Tennis Championships at UCLA and earned a ranking of 17 on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Ohio Valley Region ranking, the first Xavier female athlete to finish a season ranked. She earned Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team honors as a junior and senior, as well as ITA Division I All-Academic team all three eligible years.Â
