Freemantle, Tandy Lead Musketeers to 101-49 Season-Opening Victory Over Oakland

CINCINNATI - Sophomore tandem Zach Freemantle and KyKy Tandy combined for 39 points on Wednesday afternoon, leading the Musketeers to a 101-49 win over Oakland at Cintas Center. Five Musketeers scored in double figures as Xavier eclipsed the 100-point mark for the first time since 2017.
Freemantle posted his first career double-double with a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Tandy also matched his career high in scoring with 18 points, while dishing out a career-high seven assists.
• Oakland took an early 4-2 lead before back-to-back baskets from Jason Carter and Bryan Griffin gave the Musketeers a 6-4 advantage at the first media timeout (16:13). The Musketeers scored 16 unanswered points coming out of time timeout on 6-for-7 shooting, taking a 22-4 lead with 11:155 on the clock.
• Xavier kept up the hot shooting, connecting on 72. percent of their shots (13-for-18) for the rest of the half - taking a 53-12 lead into the locker room.
• Eight Musketeers scored in the first half, paced by sophomore KyKy Tandy who posted 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting from behind the arc. Zach Freemantle added nine points and nine rebounds, while Nate Johnson had eight points.
• Xavier hit 64.7 percent (22-for-34) of it shot attempts and recorded a 24-19 advantage on the glass. The Musketeers also forced 10 turnovers, turning the miscues into 18 points.
• Xavier opened the second half by hitting 50 percent (8-for-16) of its shot attempts, taking a 73-26 lead at the 11:56 mark. The Musketeers continued the hot shooting as they finished the half going 21-for-37 (56.8 percent) from the floor to maintain a double-figure lead they would never relinquish.
• Zach Freemantle scored 12 of his 21 points in the second half, going 6-for-8 from the floor. Dieonte Miles scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half as he went 5-for-7 from the floor.
• Freshman Dwon Odom is the first freshman to start his first game in a Xavier uniform since Trevon Bluiett vs. Northern Arizona (11-14-14). He is the first freshman to score in double figures in his first game since teammate Zach Freemantle did it last year vs. Jacksonville with 11 points. He finished with 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting with four assists and three rebounds.
• Xavier's 53 points at halftime are XU's most in a first half since scoring 62 vs. Morehead State in the 2017-18 season (11-10-17)
• Xavier's 53 points are the most in any half by a Xavier team since XU also scored 53 in the second half of a 2018 NCAA win over Texas Southern (3-16-18). XU scored 55 in a 2018 BIG EAST Tournament win over St. John's (3-3-18). XU scored 57 in the second half of a win earlier that season over Seton Hall at Cintas Center (2-14-18).
• The final margin was Xavier's largest since beating Morehead State 101-49 in the 2017-18 season (11-10-17). It's also the first time an XU opponent has scored under 50 points since that date.
• Xavier held a 45-38 advantage on the glass, with Freemantle grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Bryan Griffin added eight rebounds and eight points in his Xavier debut.
• Newcomer Nate Johnson added 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting in his Xavier debut. He added five rebounds and five assists.
• Xavier finished the game with a .606 field-goal percentage (43-for-71), while limiting to only a .232 field-goal percentage (16-for-69). Xavier also knocked down 13 three pointers (13-for-33).
