Musketeers Top Friars, 61-42, on Field Trip Day

Junior A'riana Gray posted her 25th career double-double, posting a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball picked up a 61-42 win over Providence on Friday afternoon in front of 3,317 fans on Field Trip Day. The Musketeers improved to 3-23 (2-13 BIG EAST), while the Friars dropped to 11-16 (2-13 BIG EAST).
• Xavier opened the game on a 6-2 run capped by an Aaliyah Dunham basket at the 3:42 mark. The Musketeers finished the frame by outscoring the Friars, 6-3, on 3-for-4 shooting to take a 12-5 lead.
• The Musketeers opened the second quarter on a 7-3 run to take their first double-figure lead of the game, 19-8, at the 7:46 mark. The Friars responded with a 10-0 run to close within one point (19-18) with 2:26 on the clock. Providence outscored Xavier, 15-9, to end the half as the Musketeers held onto a 21-20 lead at the break.
• Three Musketeers had four points at intermission: Aaliyah Dunham, A'riana Gray and Courtney Prenger. Gray led the team on the glass with five rebounds.
• Providence opened the second half on a 4-2 run, taking a 24-23 advantage at the 8:32 mark. Xavier responded by going on a 15-3 run on 7-for-12 shooting, taking an 11-point advantage (38-27). Xavier outscored Providence, 19-10, in the third quarter to take a 40-30 lead into the final frame.
• The Friars opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run to get within four points (42-38). Xavier responded by going on a 13-2 run on 6-for-11 shooting to force a Providence timeout at the 4:15 mark. Ashley Gomez capped the run with a three pointer as the Musketeers led the Friars, 55-40. Xavier outscored Providence, 21-12, in the final quarter to seal the 61-42 victory.
• Junior A'riana Gray scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. The forward increased her career double-double total to 25. She also increased her career scoring total to 931 points.
• Redshirt-freshman Ayanna Townsend added 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Senior Ashley Gomez chipped in seven points and three rebounds in 18 minutes of action off the bench. Gomez scored all seven points in the fourth quarter.
• Junior Aaliyah Dunham chipped in six points, four assists, four steals and four rebounds. Sophomore Lauren Wasylson posted seven rebounds, four points, two assists and two steals.
• Xavier forced 17 Friar turnovers, converting the miscues into 24 points. Xavier also scored 11 more second-chance points (19-8) than Providence.
• Xavier limited the Friars to a season-low 42 points. The Musketeers also held Providence to a .277 field-goal percentage (13-for-47).
• Xavier won the battle on the glass, 41-33. The Musketeers were also 9-for-15 from the foul line and 25-for-59 from the floor.
• Xavier returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 23 vs Creighton. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Cintas Center.
• Xavier will hold a Senior Day Ceremony prior to tip-off for Ashley Gomez.
