Musketeers Fall at Utah on Saturday Afternoon

Shelby Calhoun led Xavier with 13 points on 4-for-8 shooting
SALT LAKE CITY - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 106-71 contest at Utah on Saturday afternoon. The Musketeers moved to 0-2 on the year, while the Utes improved to 2-0.
• Utah hit five of its first eight shots to open the game, taking an 11-4 lead over the Musketeers and forcing a timeout with 6:24 on the clock. The Utes led by as many as 13 points (19-6) at the 3:46 mark before Xavier went on a 7-0 run to close within six points (19-13).
• Utah closed the first quarter on a 9-2 run, taking a 28-15 advantage. The Utes hit 62.5 percent (10-for-16) of their shot attempts in the frame, while Xavier was limited to a .250 field-goal percentage (4-for-16).
• Xavier opened the second quarter on the 6-2 run capped by a pair of Nia Clark free throws, closing within nine points (30-21). Utah responded with a 16-5 run, taking its first 20-point lead of the game (46-26) with 1:31 left in the first half. The Utes outscored the Musketeers, 22-13, in the second quarter - taking a 50-28 lead into the locker room.
• The first half featured 24 fouls and 26 free-throw attempts. Xavier went 10-for-11 from the charity stripe. Utah held a 22-21 advantage on the glass and scored 13 more points off of turnovers (15-2).
• Shelby Calhoun paced the Musketeers with nine points, while Shaila Beeler added seven. Mikayla Hayes pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
• Utah maintained its double-figure lead for the remainder of the contest. The Musketeers closed within 22 points twice in the third quarter, but the Utes kept up their hot shooting to pull away - connecting on 50 percent (20-for-40) of their shot attempts in the half.
• Xavier hit 50 percent (13-for-26) of its shot attempts in the second half, paced by Aanaya Harris who scored 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting. She added two steals in the half.
• Shelby Calhoun led three Musketeers in double figures with 13 points on 4-for-8 shooting. She added four rebounds and one block.
• Aanaya Harris added 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting in 22 minutes of action off the bench. She added two steals and one rebound.
• Shaila Beeler chipped in 11 points, while Nia Clark and Mackayla Scarlett both added nine points.
• Mikayla Hayes led the team on the glass with six rebounds. Utah won the battle on the glass, 46-34.
• Utah finished the game with a .520 field-goal percentage (38-for-73), while limiting the Musketeers to a .370 clip (22-for-60). The Utes also forced 21 Xavier turnovers, converting the miscues into 21 points. Utah also hed a 46-30 advantage in points in the paint.
• The game featured 44 fouls. Xavier went 25-for-32 from the foul line and Utah went 16-for-23. The 32 free-throw attempts for Xavier are the most in a game for Xavier since Nov. 25, 2020 at Detroit (21-for-33). The 25 made free throws are the most in a game for Xavier since Feb. 6, 2015 vs Marquette (28-for-34).
• Xavier returns home for back-to-back games, starting with a contest vs in-state foe Miami (Ohio). The home opener vs the RedHawks is set for Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.
