Musketeers pick up sixth conference championship in eight years
GENEVA, Ohio - Xavier men's swimming secured its third-straight BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championship on Saturday evening at SPIRE Institute. Xavier collected 11 event championships and had 17 all-conference performances in individual events to take over first on the second day of the meet and built its advantage from there, eventually winning by over 170 points over second-place Villanova.
Xavier finished day one in third place after two relays and a diving event. Xavier took first in the 800 free relay and second in the 200 medley relay to trail Villanova and Providence.Â
On day two, Xavier grabbed first place in three of the four events on Thursday evening, with titles in the 500 free for Andrew Martin and 50 free for Christian Thomas, as well as a 200 free relay win in school record time, to move the Musketeers into first place, leading second-place Villanova by 11 points.
Xavier used 21 finals swims, including three event wins, to extend that lead on day three. The Musketeers collected championships in the 200 free for Andrew Martin, in the 100 back for Christian Thomas, and the 400 medley relay, as well as five other top-three finishes. The Musketeers headed into the final day with a 77 point lead on second place Villanova.
