
Ovalle, Scarlett Lead Musketeers to Road Win at SIUE

Mackayla Scarlett scored a career-high 21 points on Sunday afternoon
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Fernanda Ovalle and Mackayla Scarlett hit career highs in scoring on Sunday afternoon, leading the Musketeers to a 73-65 win at SIUE on Sunday afternoon. Xavier improves to 6-1, while the Cougars drop to 0-5.
Xavier trailed by eight points at the break (38-30), but used an 8-0 run to start the second half - tying the game at 38-38. The Musketeers outscored the Cougars, 24-11, in the third frame behind 9-for-16 shooting - taking a 54-49 lead into the final quarter.
Xavier led by as many as 13 points (70-57) with 2:04 left in the game.
• Fernanda Ovalle finished with a career-high 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting. The freshman guard added eight rebounds, one steal and one assist.
• Mackayla Scarlett posted a career-high 21 points on 6-for-12 shooting. She has scored in double figures in every game this season and now has 18 career double-figure scoring games. The junior guard added six rebounds and three steals.
• Xavier had two players score 20 or more points in a game for the first time since Jan. 10, 2020 at Georgetown (A'riana Gray and Aaliyah Dunham each scored 20 points).
• Taylor Smith chipped in 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting, her sixth game in double figures this season. The guard added four assists, three rebounds and one assist.
• Kaysia Woods scored 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. She added a career-high five assists to go along with one block and one steal.
• Xavier hit 40.3 percent (25-for-62) of its shot attempts and was 5-for-14 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 18-for-28 from the foul line.
• Xavier won the battle on the glass, 41-40, and scored 13 more second-chance points (21-8) than the Cougars. Xavier also scored one more fastbreak point (10-9).
• SIUE held a 26-10 advantage in bench points and scored two more points off of turnovers (15-13) than the Musketeers.
