Women's Basketball Falls at Creighton on Friday Night

Ayanna Townsend finished with nine points and a team-high five rebounds and steals
OMAHA, Neb. - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 68-47 road contest at Creighton on Friday night. The Musketeers moved to 7-16 (2-12 BIG EAST), while the Bluejays improved to 17-7 (12-4 BIG EAST).
• Creighton opened the game on a 5-0 run and led by as many as eight points (14-6) at the 1:44 mark. Aanaya Harris hit a basket on the next possession to get the Musketeers within six points, 14-8. Harris led Xavier with four points in the opening quarter.
• Xavier opened the second quarter on a 7-1 run capped by a Mackayla Scarlett three pointer, tying the game at 15-15 with 7:22 left in the half. The Bluejays responded with a 10-2 run, taking a 25-17 advantage with 1:56 on the clock. Shelby Calhoun scored four unanswered points to close the half, getting the Musketeers within four points (25-21). Xavier outscored Creighton, 13-11, in the second quarter.
• Shelby Calhoun led Xavier with eight points at the break, while Aanaya Harris chipped in six. Ayanna Townsend led the team on the glass with four rebounds. Creighton held a 20-11 advantage on the glass.
• The Musketeers closed within three points (30-27) on an Ayanna Townsend basket with 6:54 left in the third quarter before the Bluejays went on a 9-2 run, taking their first double-figure lead of the game (39-29). Creighton led by as many as 11 points (42-31) in the quarter before the Musketeers battled back to make it a two-possession game (42-36) at the 1:47 mark. The Bluejays hit a three pointer in the closing minute of the frame to make the score 45-36 heading into the final quarter.
• Creighton hit 50 percent (8-for-16) if its shot attempts in the final quarter, outscoring the Musketeers, 23-11. The Bluejays hit four 3-pointers in the final stanza to pull away for the 68-47 victory.
• Shaila Beeler scored eight of her 10 points in the second half, going 4-for-4 from the floor.
• Aanaya Harris and Shaila Beeler paced the Xavier offense as both players finished with 10 points. Beeler added a team-high four assists, while Harris pulled down three rebounds.
• Ayanna Townsend finished with nine points and a team-high five rebounds. She added a game and career-high five steals.
• Xavier had 13 steals in the game, the team's eighth game of the season with 10 or more steals.
• Shelby Calhoun added eight points, three assists, two steals and two rebound. Mackayla Scarlett finished with six points, three rebounds and two steals.
• Xavier was limited to a .370 field-goal percentage (20-for-54) and was 6-for-10 from the foul line.
• Xavier forced Creighton into a season-high 19 turnovers. Both teams scored 13 points off of turnovers, while the Bluejays scored seven more second-chance points (10-3). Creighton won the battle on the glass, 41-22.
• Xavier continues its road trip at Providence on Sunday, Feb. 13. Tip-off is slated for 12 p.m. ET with the game being aired nationally on FS1.
