Musketeers Fall to No. 10 UConn on Friday Night

Kaysia Woods scored a season-high 14 points vs the Huskies
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball dropped an 89-35 contest vs No. 10 UConn on Friday night at Cintas Center.
Xavier dropped to 8-17 (3-13 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 18-5 (12-1 BIG EAST).
• UConn opened the game on a 5-2 run and took its first double-figure lead (17-7) with 14 seconds left in the quarter. Shelby Calhoun hit a putback jumper as time expired, making the score 18-9 at the end of the first frame.
• Xavier closed within six points three times early in the second quarter. The Musketeers hit four of their first seven shots of the frame, making the score 25-19 at the media timeout (6:05). UConn closed the frame on a 19-0 run on 8-for-12 shooting, taking a 44-19 lead into the break.
• Kaysia Woods scored a team-high eight points on 3-for-3 shooting at the break, while Shelby Calhoun had four points and a team-high six rebounds. UConn held a 22-13 advantage on the glass.
• UConn opened the second half on an 18-0 run on 6-for-8 shooting, taking a 62-19 advantage. The Huskies outscored Xavier, 45-16, in the second half behind a .667 field-goal percentage (16-for-24) - pulling away for the 89-35 victory.
• Kaysia Woods led Xavier with six second-half points. Courtney Prenger paced the team on the glass with five rebounds.
• Kaysia Woods scored a season-high 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting. She added two assists.
• Mackayla Scarlett chipped in seven points, while Ayanna Townsend finished with six. Shaila Beeler added four assists.
• Shelby Calhoun led the team on the glass with eight rebounds. Courtney Prenger chipped in six rebounds and two steals.
• Xavier was limited to a .240 field-goal percentage (12-for-50). The Musketeers were 5-for-12 from behind the arc and 6-for-9 from the foul line.
• UConn scored 29 points off of 23 Xavier turnovers. The Huskies also held a 35-26 advantage on the glass and scored 13 more fastbreak points (16-3). UConn hit 63 percent (34-for-54) of its shot attempts, the second-highest team field-goal percentage by a BIG EAST team this season (21st in NCAA).
• Xavier travels to Butler on Sunday, Feb. 20 for its final BIG EAST regular-season road game. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. from Hinkle Fieldhouse.
