Calhoun Leads Musketeers in Loss to Hoyas

The guard posted a team-high 11 points and seven rebounds on Friday night
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 54-40 BIG EAST matchup vs Georgetown on Friday night at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers moved to 9-18 (4-14 BIG EAST), while the Hoyas improved to 8-18 (3-15 BIG EAST).
• The first half was back-and-forth as it featured five lead changes and two ties. Neither team led by more than two possessions.
• Tied at 18 with 2:03 left in the half, Shelby Calhoun knocked down a three pointer to give Xavier what would be its final lead of the game. Georgetown finished the half on a 5-0 run, taking a 23-21 advantage into the locker room.
• Shelby Calhoun and Ayanna Townsend each had six points in the first half, while Townsend added a team-high four rebounds. The Hoyas held a 22-20 advantage on the glass.
• Georgetown outscored the Musketeers, 16-8, in the third quarter - taking the first double-figure lead of the game for either team, 39-29. Xavier was limited to one field goal (1-for-13) in the frame, while going 5-for-8 from the foul line.
• The Hoyas outscored Xavier by four points (15-11) in the final quarter, pulling away for the 54-40 victory. Georgetown's defense limited the Musketeers to only five baskets (5-for-26) in the second half.
• Shelby Calhoun paced the Musketeers in scoring with 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting, her eighth game of the year in double figures. The guard also matched Mackayla Scarlett for the team high in rebounds with seven.
• Ayanna Townsend chipped in seven points, five rebounds and two blocks. Shaila Beeler finished with six points, four rebounds and two assists.
• Kaysia Woods scored five points and pulled down a season-high six rebounds.
• Mackayla Scarlett added four points and three assists. Her seven rebounds matched her career high in the category.
• Xavier matched its season low in made field goals with 12 (12-for-47). The .255 field-goal percentage is the third lowest for the Musketeers. The 40 points are also the second fewest in a game for Xavier this season.
• Georgetown won the battle on the glass, 51-41, and scored 10 more second-chance points (19-9). The Hoyas also held a 24-12 advantage in points off of turnovers.
• Xavier continues its homestand on Sunday, Feb. 27 vs Villanova. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Cintas Center. The team will hold a pregame Senior Day ceremony for Ayanna Townsend.
