Sixth Inning Error Helps Volunteers to Victory
KNOXVILLE, TN. -Â Xavier baseball held a talented Tennessee lineup to just three hits in the first 5.2 innings, but an error sparked a massive rally to give Tennessee a convincing win on Tuesday night. The Musketeers sent seven different pitchers to the mound, and none of them surrendered more than two hits to a lineup boasting seven hitters over a .315 average.
Xavier came out swinging, hitting three deep fly balls in the top of the first, but the park was just able to hold them in. Tennessee scored one when it was their turn to bat, capitalizing with two outs in the inning. They scored two more in the second and another in the third, but as the fifth inning ended, the Volunteers only had three hits to show against the Musketeer pitching staff.Â
Tennessee broke it open in the sixth with six runs, four unearned as a huge two out rally gave the home team a 10-0 lead. The score would remain and Justin Loer and George Eisenhardt pitched the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run.Â
With two outs on the board in the ninth and nobody on base, Xavier proved they never give up. Andrew Walker tripled to deep right-center, and Alex Helmin knocked him home two pitched later. Another base hit made it three in a row to force a Tennessee pitching change, and the game would end 10-1.
The Musketeers will be back home this weekend to face Creighton. First pitch on Friday is at 3:00 pm ET.
