Five golfers with Xavier ties are headed to U.S. Open Sectionals.
CINCINNATI --- Xavier University freshman Mason Witt and 2017 XU graduate Matthew Wetterich were among nine players who earned spots in the U.S. Open Sectionals thanks to their play in today's U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Maketewah Country Club. Wetterich shot a 1-under-par 70, while Witt shot an even-par 71 and was one of the survivors of a playoff to determine the final qualifiers today.
Zach Burton, an incoming Xavier freshman from Columbus, Ohio, had previously qualified for U.S. Open Sectional play at Scioto Reserve CC. In addition to the two already listed from today's qualifier at Maketewah, Wetterich's younger brother Daniel Wetterich also qualified today as did Wes Homan. Daniel played as a freshman at XU in 2015-16 and Homan was an XU freshman in 2002-03.
The five players listed with Xavier ties that are headed to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifiers are looking to join 2007 Xavier graduate and XU Hall of Famer Jason Kokrak at this year's U.S. Open. Kokrak, a three-time PGA Tour winner, already has a spot in the U.S. Open, which will be held June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Andy Pope, 2006 Xavier graduate, has earned a spot in the U.S. Open field five times. He came up a little short in today's qualifier at Maketewah, though, with a 74.
