Wiehe, Sallee and Clark score in 3-0 win to clinch the No.1 seed BIG EAST championship

CINCINNATI - No. 17 Xavier women's soccer clinched a share of the 2023 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST tournament with a 3-0 win over Marquette on Thursday evening at Corcoran Field. Xavier moved to 13-2-4 overall and 6-0-4 in conference play, matching Georgetown for the best record in league play.

Xavier took the lead in the first 10 minutes, with Samantha Wiehe scoring from Kennedy Clark after Regan Dancer caused a Marquette turnover in Xavier's attacking third.

The Musketeers made it a 2-0 lead in the final 10 minutes of the first half, with Shelby Sallee scoring after Sonia Vargas sent the ball into the box, bouncing off a defender to Sallee for the 2-0 lead at the half.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Kennedy Clark added another tally to the lead, with Wiehe feeding her the ball on the left side of the field and Clark dribbling into the box and shooting from the left side for the 3-0 lead., setting the final score.

Xavier's defense picked up its sixth-straight shutout, and 12th of the season, one shy of the school record. Maria Galley collected a pair saves for her 11th complete shutout of the season, matching the school single-season record.

The title marks Xavier's third BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, also claiming the title in 2019 and 2021.

Xavier has secured a spot in the 2023 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship Presented by Jeep, earning the No. 1 seed and a bye to the semifinals.

The Musketeers will next be in action against the winner of the opening round match between No. 4 seed Providence and No. 5 seed St. John's at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md., on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

9' | XAVIER | Regan Dancer caused an MU turnover on the edge of the penalty box, crossing to Kennedy Clark who tapped the ball to Samantha Wiehe. Wiehe shot to the left corner for the 1-0 lead.

34' | XAVIER | Sonia Vargas sent the ball into the box from the left side. The ball bounced off an MU defender to Shelby Sallee who shot just over the goalkeeper's reach for the 2-0 lead.

52' | XAVIER | Samantha Wiehe tapped the ball ahead to Kennedy Clark, who dribbled into the box and shot from the left side to put Xavier ahead 3-0.

NOTABLE

Samantha Wiehe's goal was her team-high seventh of the season, and her fifth game-winner. She also picked up her team-high matching sixth assist on Kennedy Clark's goal to give bring her team-high point total to 20 points.
Shelby Sallee scored her sixth goal of the season, combining with an assist to give her 13 points on the season.
Kennedy Clark scored her third goal of the season in the second half. She also picked up an assist on Wiehe's goal, her team-high matching sixth of the season, bringing her season total to 12 points.
Regan Dancer picked up an assist on Wiehe's goal, her fourth of the season, combined with two goals for eight points.
Xavier finished with a 27-10 advantage on shots, matching the season high for shots.
Maria Galley played the full time in-goal, collecting two saves and picking up her 11th complete shutout of the season, matching the school record, and her 22nd as a Musketeer, giving her the second-most career shutouts in program records.
Natalie Bain, Maddie Reed and Ella Rogers all played over 75 minutes to help limit the Golden Eagles to just three shots on-goal. The Musketeer defense earned its sixth-straight shutout.
The Xavier defense hasn't allowed a goal in over 540 minute of play, marking the 12th clean sheet of the season, second-most in program history.
The win over Marquette extended Xavier's unbeaten streak in BIG EAST regular season games to 28 matches, dating back to September 2021 and marks back-to-back unbeaten BIG EAST seasons for the Musketeers.
Xavier picks up its third BIG EAST regular season title in five years, also taking the title in 2019 and 2021
The 2023 championship marks the third regular season conference title in program history. Xavier has also won conference tournament titles in 1998, 2000 and 2019.
The trip to the league tournament marks the third-straight season the Musketeers have made the six-team tournament, and the sixth time in head coach Nate Lie's seven-year tenure.
