No. 17 Women's Soccer Claims Share of BIG EAST Championship with Win Over Marquette

Wiehe, Sallee and Clark score in 3-0 win to clinch the No.1 seed BIG EAST championship
CINCINNATI - No. 17 Xavier women's soccer clinched a share of the 2023 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST tournament with a 3-0 win over Marquette on Thursday evening at Corcoran Field. Xavier moved to 13-2-4 overall and 6-0-4 in conference play, matching Georgetown for the best record in league play.
Xavier took the lead in the first 10 minutes, with Samantha Wiehe scoring from Kennedy Clark after Regan Dancer caused a Marquette turnover in Xavier's attacking third.
The Musketeers made it a 2-0 lead in the final 10 minutes of the first half, with Shelby Sallee scoring after Sonia Vargas sent the ball into the box, bouncing off a defender to Sallee for the 2-0 lead at the half.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Kennedy Clark added another tally to the lead, with Wiehe feeding her the ball on the left side of the field and Clark dribbling into the box and shooting from the left side for the 3-0 lead., setting the final score.
Xavier's defense picked up its sixth-straight shutout, and 12th of the season, one shy of the school record. Maria Galley collected a pair saves for her 11th complete shutout of the season, matching the school single-season record.
The title marks Xavier's third BIG EAST Regular Season Championship, also claiming the title in 2019 and 2021.
Xavier has secured a spot in the 2023 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship Presented by Jeep, earning the No. 1 seed and a bye to the semifinals.
The Musketeers will next be in action against the winner of the opening round match between No. 4 seed Providence and No. 5 seed St. John's at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md., on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

- The 2023 championship marks the third regular season conference title in program history. Xavier has also won conference tournament titles in 1998, 2000 and 2019.
- The trip to the league tournament marks the third-straight season the Musketeers have made the six-team tournament, and the sixth time in head coach Nate Lie's seven-year tenure.
