Men Swimming Finishes Second, Women Fourth at 2023 BIG EAST Championships

Andrew Martin named Most Outstanding; Brent MacDonald and staff named Men's Staff of the Year
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Xavier men's and women's swimming wrapped up the final day of the 2023 BIG EAST Championships, with the Xavier men finishing as runners-up and the Musketeer women placing fourth.
On the men's side, the Musketeers set three new school records and collected another event championship to give the Musketeers seven for the meet. Andrew Martin set a new BIG EAST record, and school record, in the mile to win his third individual title of the event. Aiden Leamer and Jon Bernard also set new school records on the way to top-three finishes on the final day. During the meet, 10 different Musketeers earned All-BIG EAST.
For the women, Erin Ritz picked up a silver medal in the 200 fly, setting a new school record in the process. The Musketeers closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay. Xavier had nine all-conference performances during the course of the four-day meet.
Following the meet, Andrew Martin, who posted all-conference performances in seven events including five gold medals, was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer. Head coach Brent MacDonald and his staff were named the 2023 Men's Coaching Staff of the Year following the meet.

BIG EAST Swimming Championship - Day 4 by Xavier Musketeers on Exposure
On the men's side, the Musketeers set three new school records and collected another event championship to give the Musketeers seven for the meet. Andrew Martin set a new BIG EAST record, and school record, in the mile to win his third individual title of the event. WOMEN'S NOTABLE |
- Emma Swabb lead Xavier in the timed final of the 1,650 free, posting a time of 17:06.43 to place ninth overall. Sydney Smith scored in 17, Emily Guerrera in 18th and Mary Sweetman in 20th.
- Hannah Pugh posted a time of 1:59.37 in the 200 back to place fifth, and Kali Fischer touched just behind her in sixth place, finishing in 2:00.29. Brooke Atkins scored in 10th place and Emma Swabb placed 14th in the B-final, and Amy Van Son took the top spot in the Bonus final. Reese Turner also took part in the Bonus final.
- Clare Bosse and Olivia Oyster took part in the Championship final of the 100 free, placing seventh and eighth respectively. Clara Keiser took the top spot in the B-final and Alexis Worrall scored in 11th in consolation final.
- Julianne Libler led Xavier in the 200 breast, setting a time of 2:21.10 in the consolation final to place 11th. Kate Lair finished 13th and Emily Guerrera placed 14th. Emma Amon won the Bonus final.
- Erin Ritz took the silver medal in the 200 fly, setting a school-record time of 2:00.70. Sophia Romero also took part in the Championship final, finishing eighth. Anna Baker and Anna Voelkerding took part in the C-final as an exhibition race.
- Xavier closed out the meet with a second-place finish for Clara Keiser, Olivia Oyster, Clare Bosse and Kali Fischer setting a time of 3:24.13 in the 400 free relay.
- The Musketeers collected 1012 points to finish fourth.

MEN'S NOTABLE |
- On the final day, Andrew Martin opened the session by besting his own school record in the mile with a time of 15:04.12 setting a new BIG EAST record on the way to his third conference championship in the event. Adam Lamping finished 11th and Brett Wilson placed 12th in the timed finals
- Michael Benington set a time of 1:47.50 in the 200 back to place fourth. Jon Bernard finished sixth and Davis Klein placed seventh in the Championship final. Matt Adanin and Aiden Neuman took part in the consolation final.
- Kyle Hudson led three Musketeers in the Championship final of the 100 free, placing fourth with at time of 44.88. Ethan Saunders placed seventh and Gage Hannewyk placed eighth.
- Jon Bernard took second in the 200 breast with a new school-record time of 1:59.50. Nathan Wall and Will Serad took part in the Championship final, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.
- Aiden Leamer also picked up a silver medal in the 200 fly, besting the school record he set in prelims to 1:46.33. Jack Parker placed sixth and Brett Wilson placed eighth in the Championship final. Caleb Petranchuk took the top spot in the B-final.
- Kyle Hudson, Gage Hannewyk, Ethan Saunders and Andrew Martin set a time of 2:59.30 in the 400 free relay to finish third.
- Going into the final relay, Xavier trailed first place Georgetown by just nine points, 758-749, but the Hoyas took second in the final race, finishing 11 points ahead of Xavier in the final standings, with the Musketeers taking runners-up.
