Musketeers Come Up Short in BIG EAST Finale at No. 9 UConn

Huskies top Xavier, 60-51, at Gampel Pavilion on Monday Night
STORRS, Conn. - Xavier women's basketball dropped its BIG EAST finale, 60-51, on Monday night at No. 9 UConn at Gampel Pavilion. The Musketeers moved to 7-22 (0-20 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 26-5 (18-2 BIG EAST) - claiming the outright conference title with the win.
Xavier led the nationally ranked Huskies, 22-20, with 8:11 left in the first half before the Huskies went on a 16-2 run - taking a 12-point lead (36-24) into the locker room.
UConn led by as many as 18 points twice in the second half, but the Musketeers ended the game on an 11-4 run to make it a nine-point contest (60-51). Xavier outscored UConn, 27-24, in the second half.
• Fernanda Ovalle led Xavier with nine points. The freshman guard also dished out a team-high four assists to go along with two reobunds, two blocks and two steals.
• Mackayla Scarlett and Courtney Prenger added eight points, while three other players finished with six points: Kaleigh Addie, Shelby Calhoun and Taylor Smith.
• Shelby Calhoun added three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Courtney Prenger pulled down two rebounds and blocked two shots.
• Xavier finished the game with a .393 field-goal percentage (22-for-56) and went 3-for-14 from behind the arc. The Musketeers also went 4-for-4 from the foul line.
• UConn won the battle on the glass, 37-30, and scored eight more points off of turnovers (20-12). Xavier held a 19-2 advantage in bench points, while the Huskies scored four more points in the paint (32-28).
• The Musketeers open BIG EAST Tournament play vs No. 6 seed Seton Hall on Friday, March 3. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. ET from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., with the game being aired nationally on SNY.
