Musketeers pick up fourth-straight win

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Xavier baseball stayed in the win column, picking up a fourth-straight win after topping Northern Kentucky, 5-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.

Xavier took a two-run lead in the second an RBI double from Carter Hendrickson and a sac fly from Garrett Schultz. The Norse responded in the fourth, getting three runs on three hits to take the lead.

An RBI single from Jared Cushing in the fifth brought in Matt McCormick to tie the game at 3-3, and Garrett Schultz picked up a second RBI of the day on a double in the sixth, bringing in Hayden Christiansen to put Xavier up 4-3.

Xavier added another run in the ninth, after Andrew Walker singled to lead off the inning, then used a stolen base and sac fly from Jack Housinger to move to third. After Grant Stephenson walked and Matt McCormick was intentionally walked to load the bases, Matthew DePrey put a ball into play, with Grant Stephenson beating the throw to third on the fielders choice to set the final score at 5-3.

Next up, Xavier opens up its trip to the West Coast with a three-game series at UC Santa Barbara, set to begin on Friday, March 3. Game one is set for an 8:05 PM ET first pitch.

AT THE PLATE

Garrett Schultz (1-3, 1 BB) drove in a pair of RBIs.
Hayden Christiansen went 3-3 at the plate with a walk, coming around to score three times.
Grant Stephenson went 2-4 with a walk, scoring a run.
Carter Hendrickson (1-4), Jared Cushing (1-5), Matthew DePrey (1-5, 1 BB) each finished with an RBI.
Andrew Walker and Matt McCormick each finished with a hit on an 11-hit day for the Musketeers.

ON THE MOUND

Luke Hoskins made the start, allowing three earned runs on four hits in 3.0 innings pitched. He had two strikeouts to two walks.
Jonathan Kelly pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out four, giving up just two hits and walk.
Nick Kolze entered in the sixth, facing the minimum through 2.0 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Kolze picked up the win to move 1-0.
Clay Schwaner pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to close out the game, allowing just one hit. Schwaner picked up the save.
