Baseball Falls in Game One at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -Â Xavier baseball battled with No. 24 West Virginia to the final inning but fell 5-4 on a walk-off double in the ninth in the series opener.
The Mountaineers took the 1-0 lead in the second, but the Musketeers responded in the next frame, tying it up on a solo shot from Jared Cushing. The 1-1 tie held into the bottom of the fourth when West Virginia plated a pair of runs to move ahead 3-1.
Another Musketeer home run, this time a two-run shot from Matt McCormick that brought in Jack Housinger after he took a lead-off walk, tied the game up at 3-3 in the sixth inning.
The Mountaineers inched back in front in the seventh, getting a run on a sac bunt to lead 4-3, but the Musketeers had the answer in the next half inning, with Housinger getting aboard with a single and McCormick driving him in with an RBI single to tie it, 4-4.
The tie held to the bottom of the ninth when WVU manufactured a run for the walk-off 5-4 win.
The three-game series with West Virginia continues on Saturday, set for a 4:00 p.m. start on ESPN+.Â
