Baseball Falls in Game One of Championship Series with UConn, Will Play for Title on Saturday Evening

MASON, Ohio -Â No. 2 seeded Xavier baseball fell to No. 1 seed UConn on Saturday, 6-4, forcing a second game in the BIG EAST Championship series, with the winner taking the 2023 BIG EAST Championship.
UConn posted runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead into the fourth. Matt McCormick lead off the top of four with a single, took second on a wild pitch then scored after Jared Cushing put a ball into play to make it 3-1.
Xavier scored a pair of runs on three hits in the fifth, with Jack Housinger and Andrew Walker hitting singles, and Tyler DeMartino getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Garrett Schultz hit a single through the right side to tie it up 3-3.
The tie held into the bottom of the sixth, with UConn scoring a pair of runs to retake the lead, 5-2, then added a run in the seventh to lead 6-3 going into the ninth. Xavier got the first two batter aboard, with a single from Andrew Walker and Tyler DeMartino reaching on an error. Matt McCormick drove in Walker with a sac fly to cut the lead to 6-4, setting the final score.
Xavier and UConn will play a deciding game seven of the tournament on Saturday evening, set to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. on FloSports
