Friars Upend Musketeers on Wednesday Night

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 51-45 BIG EAST contest at Providence on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.
The Musketeers move to 5-12 (0-6 BIG EAST), while the Friars improved to 9-11 (2-5 BIG EAST).
Xavier continues BIG EAST action vs Butler on Saturday, Jan. 18 vs Butler. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Cintas Center.

NOTABLE
- Providence scored eight straight points to start the game and took a 14-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Loren Christie scored all six points for Xavier on 3-for-3 shooting.
- The Musketeers outscored the Friars, 20-10, in the second quarter to take a two-point advantage into the locker room (26-24). Xavier scored eight unanswered points in the last 35 seconds of the first half (six points off of turnovers) to take the halftime lead. Aizhanique Mayo buried a three pointer as time expired to end the half.
- Loren Christie made the first basket of the second half to extend Xavier's lead to four points (28-24) before the Friars went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead, 32-28, and force a Xavier timeout. Providence outscored Xavier, 13-7, in the third frame to take a four-point lead (37-33) into the final quarter.
- Daniela López hit a three pointer to open the fourth quarter and get the Musketeers within one points (37-36). Providence responded by going on a 12-3 run, taking its largest lead of the game, 49-39, with 33 seconds left in regulation. Xavier battled back to get within four points (49-45) with 14 seconds on the clock, but the Friars pulled away for the win with a pair of Grace Efosa free throws in the closing seconds.
- Aizhanique Mayo led Xavier with 14 points and a career-high seven rebounds. The guard now has 16 career double-figure scoring games.
- Loren Christie added 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting. The forward pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists.
- Petra Oborilova chipped in six points and four rebounds. Daniela López finished with five points, one rebound and one steal.
- Tae'lor Purvis had four points, three rebounds, two assists and a game-high five steals. Meri Kanerva dished out a team-high four assists.
- Xavier posted a .288 field-goal percentage (17-for-59) and went 8-for-34 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 3-for-3 from the foul line.
- Providence won the battle on the glass, 38-31, and held a 30-2 advantage in points in the paint. Xavier scored five more points off of turnovers (15-10) and held a 30-2 advantage in bench points.
- The Friars finished with a .415 field-goal percentage (17-for-41) and went 2-for-11 from behind the arc. Providence was also 15-for-24 from the foul line.
