The No. 3 seed Pirates defeated No. 11 seed Xavier, 48-40, at Mohegan Sun Arena

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - No. 11 seed Xavier fell in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals to No. 3 seed Seton Hall, 48-40, on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

NOTABLE

Xavier opened the game game on a 9-2 run capped by an Irune Orio three pointer at the 4:28 mark. The Musketeers limited Seton Hall to 0-for-9 shooting to start the game. Xavier led by as many as 12 points (14-2) with 2:06 on the clock and led by nine points (14-9) after 10 minutes of action. Xavier limited Seton Hall to only one field goal (1-for-15) in the opening frame.
The Musketeers outscored Seton Hall, 11-10, in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead (25-15) into the locker room. Aizhanique Mayo led Xavier with five points at the break. Defensively, the Musketeers limited the Pirates to a .154 field-goal percentage (4-for-26).
Seton Hall closed within four points, 33-29, on a Yaya Lops basket with 4:12 left in the third quarter. Xavier responded with a 5-2 run, taking a 38-31 advantage with 10 minutes left in the game.
Seton Hall outscored Xavier, 17-2, in the final frame to escape with the eight-point win. The Musketeers were held without a field goal (0-for-8) in the final quarter.
The game featured two ties and one lead change. Xavier led for nearly 36 minutes of action. Seton Hall didn't take its first lead of the game until 1:41 was left in regulation.
Meri Kanerva, Aizhanique Mayo and Irune Orio all scored eight points for the Musketeers. Kanerva added a team-high four assists, while Orio pulled down four rebounds.
Tae'lor Purvis added six points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Petra Oborilova finished with seven rebounds, two blocks and two points.
Loren Christie had four points and two blocks. Daniela López finished with four points, six rebounds and a team-high three steals.
Xavier finished with a .372 field-goal percentage (16-for-43) and a .316 three-point field-goal percentage (6-for-19). The Musketeers also went 2-for-4 from the foul line.
Xavier had six blocks, the second-most blocks in a game this season for the Musketeers.
Seton Hall forced 28 turnovers, converting the miscues into 24 points. Xavier scored six points off of 15 Pirate turnovers.
The Pirates won the battle on the glass, 34-31, and held a 6-0 advantage in second-chance points. Seton Hall also scored two more points in the paint (18-16) than Xavier and held a 5-2 advantage in fastbreak points. Xavier scored seven more (8-1) bench points than the Pirates.
Seton Hall finished with a .245 field-goal percentage (13-for-53) and went 1-for-10 from behind the arc. The Pirates were also 21-for-26 from the foul line.
Meri Kanerva finished the season with 104 assists, the second most assists by a freshman in Xavier single-season history. Her 3.4 assists per game average also ranks second.

Loren Christie finished the season with 42 blocks, ranking ninth in Xavier single-season history. Her 1.4 blocks per game average also ranks ninth.
Tae'lor Purvis finished the season with 67 steals, ranking tied for seventh in Xavier single-season history. Her 2.2 steals per game average ranks tied for eighth.
